cyberdude611 -> No more hugs in schools.... (10/2/2007 3:18:18 PM)

OAK PARK, Ill. (AP) - If you need a hug, you won't get it at Percy Julian Middle School. Principal Victoria Sharts banned hugging among the suburban Chicago school's 860 students anywhere inside the building. She said students were forming "hug lines" that made them late for classes and crowded the hallways.

"Hugging is really more appropriate for airports or for family reunions than passing and seeing each other every few minutes in the halls," Sharts said.

Another reason to institute the no-hugging policy was that some hugs could be too long and too close, she said.

"There is another side to the issue when a hug is either unwanted or becomes inappropriate as judged by one of the students involved," Sharts wrote in a statement to parents. "On occasion, we do deal with those incidents. The goal is always to promote safe and orderly hallways where everybody can get by, be safe, and be on time."

hmm a hug line is a great idea!!!!

A lot more is going on in Illinois schools. Suburban Oak Lawn (not Oak Park above) just renamed Halloween to Fall Festival and Christmas to Winter Festival to pacify the 30% muslim community who incidentally pray on school property. Go figure. This PC world make me want to throw up.

seem to recall that similar happened here a while back - Christmas was renamed "Winterval" out of "sensitivity" to the Muslim, Hindu and Sikh communities.

It lasted all of about a year, when said "oppressed" minorities pointed out themselves how f'in stupid it was. They held their festivals they said, so why shouldnt the natives, when all were equally valid?

Of course the funniest aspect of it all that I found, was that few here celebrate Christmas in anything but name - its good old Heathen Yule for us.

Anyway, Divali is coming up (Hindu I think) - the festival of lights, around the same time as Halloween; its brilliant, in literal and figurative senses. Much closer to what Halloween ought to be, rather than the marketing opportunity it has become.

teenagers already feel alienated and some need that closeness to make it through the day. believe me. i have a gloom and doom teen here. being a teenager is already hard enough. i wouldnt be one for all the money in the world.
i guess parents will have to up their hug qouta at home.
good ole Samhain here. next Yule of course.  love the Yule log on tv. so nice of them to include heathens in their observance.

Christmas was originally a pagan festival until the Church got involved. They decided to use the December date to get the pagans to celebrate as they already had a winter festival. The true date of Christs birth being unknown.

I agree though that there is too much political correctness going on, i didnt see much rush to rename Ramadan.

pahunkboy -> RE: No more hugs in schools.... (10/3/2007 5:13:51 AM)

i grew up near Oak Lawn. [111th and Harlem]

Christmas is a scam so merchants make money. [commercialized]

Halloween, which all saints day nov 1st, is the purgew of evil...it the real holiday. I choose not to celebrate Halloween. [it reaks of satanizem, which isnt my thing]

Columbus day has also been renamed.
My favorite Holiday is Thanksgiven.  A day to give thanks.

LadyEllen -> RE: No more hugs in schools.... (10/3/2007 5:18:37 AM)

Halloween is not satanist! It marks the time of year when (supposedly) our deceased ancestors are closest to the realm of the living - its a remnant of ancestor worship, seen in the Christian All Saints day on the following day - another example of the church taking heathen festivals for its own.

Now, Halloween as it is marked? Nothing further from what it ought to be.

MissSCD -> RE: No more hugs in schools.... (10/3/2007 5:45:26 AM)

Maybe the kids who did all of the school shootings could have been helped if someone hugged them.

This world is stupid in its judgements sometimes.

Halloween, if memory is right, is new year's eve (Celtic calendar), and Columbus Day is bogus because he wasnt even the first to 'discover' the new world. that honor fell to the Vikings a few hundred years before hand.

a gross misunderstanding. Halloween is one of the Major Sabbats for Wiccans in  particular.
The Celts called it Samhain, which means 'summer's end', according to their ancient two-fold division of the year, when summer ran from Beltane to Samhain and winter ran from Samhain to Beltane. (Some modern Covens echo this structure by letting the High Priest 'rule' the Coven beginning on Samhain, with rulership returned to the High Priestess at Beltane.) According to the later four-fold division of the year, Samhain is seen as 'autumn's end' and the beginning of winter. Samhain is pronounced (depending on where you're from) as 'sow-in' (in Ireland), or 'sow-een' (in Wales), or 'sav-en' (in Scotland), or (inevitably) 'sam-hane' (in the U.S., where we don't speak Gaelic).
Not only is Samhain the end of autumn; it is also, more importantly, the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. Celtic New Year's Eve, when the new year begins with the onset of the dark phase of the year, just as the new day begins at sundown

trick [deception] or treat.  we presume a treat. todays kids dont even SAY IT. expect candy.

as a kid my next door neighbor gave out jesus pamplets. another neighbor told we she did not celebrate that holiday. here in PA-= if the porch light is on, then trick or treators are welcome.

--the Halloween is termed the devils night.  Newark NJ, and Detroit MI- are traditionally set on fire the night before to "celebrate".
Imaingine being afraid of arson that whole weekend.

per haps satanic is the wrong word- pagan would better describe it.

they rush teh holidays - and i am just as grim about the other holidays.

camille65 -> RE: No more hugs in schools.... (10/3/2007 11:45:43 AM)

In todays litigious society all it takes is one kid to say they were inappropriately hugged for a lawsuit against the school system, the teacher, the school board on and on.
It sucks but it has to be avoided.

What the hell?

Dude I'm Baptist and my church knew better than that! It's an old Irish holiday. Do some research.

Halloween

All Hallows Eve.

A children's book on the holiday from a non-funde Christian organization would do you a lot of good. The traditions and beliefs that started All Hallows Eve are fascinating.

...surely rather than ban hugs we should ban litigation? Even Shakespeare was on the same track, "first thing we do is kill all the lawyers".......[:D]
