GhitaAmati -> How to NOT stain wood..... (10/2/2007 8:06:22 AM)

Ok, as most of you know, I build things...quite often actually...but I generally build furniture and then leave it up to whom ever I built it for to stain or paint it to their liking....

Lately Ive been remodeling a kitchen, Id like the lumber I built the front of the cabinets out of to stay the color they are now...natural, unfortunantly I have to seal them some how...and even just the plain clear polyurethane coating is making them turn deeper and almost yellow. How can I seal them and keep the pale light wood color?? Its red oak actually, but its so pale it looks almost white, and I really like it. I dont want it to look yellow at all...any ideas??

Here is a pic, hopefully the color will come out ok...

well take some scrap pieces and try them out and hang them around the kitchen where they can take a little grease spatter, see how that is gonna work out with the dirty hands and greasy and food stuff for cleaning and keeping color..........

Just do it.

Ghita... have you considered just using wax?  I have seen lovely, high-gloss, seemingly impermeable finishes of just wax.   Think...some oriental wood works?

But...I am not a wood worker...I just watch DIY shows, so I could be wrong.

edited to add:  I Googled "finish kitchen cabinets with wax?" and got a bunch of interesting links (1,160,000 !!!)  ...though many were more about cleaning than finishing.  Good luck.  I'm gonna start calling you Rosie (Rosie the Rivetor?)

Can you find a stain that is the same color? Sikkens has some very light color stains, I know.

Everything I know of will darken the wood......even just slightly. You could try Thompsons Water Seal ( for decks)....on some scraps to see if that is accepatble -then, go with a clear bowling alley wax.......takes several hours to dry and lots and lots of elbow grease to get the shimmering finish......has to be redone once or twice a year. Experiment/enjoy.

Anything that penetrates the pores of the wood will slightly darken it.As MsBearlee said, wax would seal and protect.Experience says it does not darken a wood,so if that is your desire and there is not a product better to be found,I would consider wax.
