damn, way things have been and the lack of major highway construction across the state and roads being open I thought the State of Michigan had basically already filed Chapter 7 and the last person out was to shut off the lights.

If the elected idiots and govenor in Illinois managed to keep us going way past their deadline, Michigan has a better than even chance of making it.

Because we owe bazillions of dollars. It's all over the news here. Funny thing is that what seems to be upsetting people here the most is that the Lottery will shut down and there will be no Liquor deliveries.

this happened here about a decade ago, most nonessential state offices were shut down for about a whole two days and the feds kicked in and covered part of the budget, so really the employees just got a little time off.

Ugh ugh ugh. I wish I had sold my house last year! Now I'm scared (and rightly so) that it just won't sell at all. Sigh.
Anyone want to buy a lovely home with 5+ acres? Deer, coyotes, peacocks, turkeys and grouse are just some of the things that pass through every day.

A state government, shutting down?  Why?

There is a law on the books in California that the state has to have a balanced budget and the Governor has to get state authorization to borrow any money.

The Governator came in with the Rove's borrow and spend mentality, and overran the state budget.  When he attempted to borrow money to cover the expenses, the legislature gave him the finger and said suck it up, nitwit.

So the only thing he could do was shut down state government for a few weeks to keep things under budget.

All the Republican twaddle about less government is better was proven by this, because the government (except for essential services) shut down and nothing bad happened to the state.

Hope that clarifies "Why a state government can be shut down."

Geez this makes me sad...I grew up in Burton..a small city outside of Flint (have lived in the Va Beach, VA area for 24 years now)   it really wasn't a bad place to live back then.

2 bed/2 bath total sq ft of 1800. Attached workroom with potbelly stove, attached 2+ car garage.
On the edge of Oakland County just below Lapeer! Great schools! 5.17 heavily wooded acres. Asking 260,000 as is.
Anyone??

PA shut down a few days. it was no big deal. driver license renewal, boating in state parks was suspending. and closed. a few people bitched...but the way modern society works anymore ick.

BTW-I cant decide which state is in worse shape MI or OH; both lost a HUGE amount of the good jobs. [you could throw in Pittsburgh] the last one out turn off the lights?
