One of my jobs is security at a higher end apartment complex for students in the city of sin, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. You'd be amazed at the kind of crap I've had to deal with and see here. People loaded up with alcohol and coke slashing their wrists and at the same time really happy to see me and trying to give me a hug? You bet I had to deal with that.

But the majority of my job is dealing with domestic assaults. Good lord, that seems to be the favorite thing to do around here, is beat the hell out of your girlfriend/boyfriend.

One such case, a basketball player on the Central Michigan University's basketball team, Megan, keeps getting her ass royally beat. One time, I had to pull her boyfriend off her, because he had her pinned up against a truck and was choking her out. After which she stood there with the cell in her hand, saying, "But I can't call the cops, he's my boyfriend!"

And each and every time the cops are called out here, she refuses to press charges. And for a while, the cops were out here about once a week. One instance, at 5 in the morning, she was screaming for help so loud that it woke the residents upstairs. And again, no charges pressed. At one point the cops were called, and they found an unregistered handgun and some drugs, which the girlfriend said was his.

Management at the complex doesn't seem to care and is otherwise terribly inept, and they let her re-sign her lease and she's still here. I see the boyfriend driving on property everyday in her car, and I know he's staying with her. I've tried to catch him and warn him off property so that the next time the cops are called they can at least arrest him for trespassing, but to no avail. He's a slippery devil.

I go out of my way to watch her apartment at night, and to keep an eye out for the boyfriend, but I'm the only person who does that, the only person who seems to care.

Now I'm not doing this to help the girlfriend, I couldn't care less if she gets beaten to death, because it would be her own dumbass fault. She's too weak to help herself. I'm doing this because I don't like guys like that. So basically I'm doing this for personal reasons. But considering the victim seems content to keep being a victim, and my bosses don't really care, should I even keep wasting my time?

My thoughts,

You shouldn't`t be involved in security work.

Honestly, no, you shouldnt waste your time. She is enabling him to do as he pleases. My guess is if shed put her foot down he'd never have had the balls to do what he does. Since she continually allows it, no matter what you do, it wont stop. Its out of your hands, obviously.
Until she takes the steps to do something, orif he hurts her badly enough to put her in the hospital, you cant help her. Once she is hospitalized, the state can press charges without her permission.
Watch yourself, dont give her any reason to turn your good nature against you. Watch out for a stalking charge if her bf gets anoyed with you. Being the good guy can bite you in the ass sometimes.

To answer the question - "Should a good samaritan even try?" Yes. But a good samaritan also needs to know when to give up. This sounds like the case.

decay of society. ill live in a small town where there is some semblance of law and order.

violence is never the answere. unfortuatley the main culture celebrates violence. it makes as much sense of the running of the bulls.

in an age of enlightenment- we after all- are supposedly a modern society. why on earth should we have the need for battern womans shelters?

shame on the men that beat woman. shame on the woman that provoke a man. in the end- the children suffer and society pays.

Say you catch him... then what. Probably the most dangerous thing a person can do is get in the middle of a domestic dispute. Unless I'm mistaken, that's where most law enforcement injuries arise - getting in the middle of a situation like that.

My advice? If you're enjoying yourself, keep doing what you're doing. But be careful, and don't get too emotionally involved. Keep things in perspective: Billions and billions of people have come and gone on this planet and it really won't make much of a difference in the end, no matter what you do.

Well said. Doctors save lives but also see people die. A fireman might save a life or watch one that he/she saved die anyway. There has to be a certain level of detachment to bear that burden. sainity is right - if you like what you do then keep doing it.

Mt. Pleasant is the "city of sin"???  Okayyyyyyyy.

Now, I would virtually swear that shortly before I moved out of Michigan they passed a law whereby the woman no longer has to press charges, that the police can do so in lieu of her consent.  Specifically because so many women were afraid to do so.

Does that not apply in this case because you are private security???  Next time hwo about YOU call the real cops and have them come and deal with it.

ouch. i beg to differ. one person CAN make a difference. not everyone is as jaded as you suggest. i encourage the OP- to keep doing what he does. every day counts- every life counts. i dont discount those whom made a difference in my life. in an ocean of human greed- his unselfishness is refreshing and welcomed. if every one did a ramdon act of kindness maybe 2007 would be a stellar year. dare to dream.

Apparently you don't live in Mt. Pleasant. The college here once ranked number 7 in the nation for party colleges, according to Playboy magazine. People drive from Detroit to party in Mt. Pleasant. Drinking and sex are rampant, as are gambling and drugs, which the local indian casino provides in abundance. More people contract chlamydia in Mt. Pleasant than in any other town in Michigan.

Aside from college, there are only four reasons to come to Mt. Pleasant: drinking, drugs, gambling, and sex. Hence, the city of sin. There is a reason that a town this small has five police departments.

There is that law, however that's only if there are visible signs of an assault on the victim. And since the boyfriend simply takes off each and every time, even when there ARE visible bruises, there's no one to press charges against.

Other times she'll make an excuse, claiming that she ate some lemon chicken or some such and that made her face break out. Since she won't provide any information on the boyfriend, and he's not present, the cops have nothing to go on.

I have called the cops, many times, to try and catch him on property, but like I said in my original post, he just takes off. It's a game of cat and mouse. Even if he's inside the apartment, the cops have no legal reason to enter if they're not invited in.

So he just shows up during the day, at some point in the course of the week she'll get beaten up, and he'll leave. Sometimes a roommate or upstairs resident will call the cops, sometimes they won't.

Well, how about you expand your vocabulary. How exactly is my temperament detrimental to my job? Because I want to get rid of a threat to a resident?

That's normal life for her. Interfere and she may try to kill you. In her dysfunctional little world her and her boyfriend are a perfectly normal couple, and anyone who goes after her man may as well be going after her, and she'll react in the same way you would if someone was going after someone close to you.

Will he kill her? He very well may. Situations like that tend to deteriorate. What they need is counseling, and if you really want to help her give her some pamphlets anonymously. But again, be awfully damn careful, and don't get between them if you can help it.

Oh, I've only gotten between them that one time when he was choking her out. I know he's dangerous, as I wrote in my post, they found his handgun and drugs. That's why when I have the opportunity to warn him off property, I always wait for the cops. Unfortunately, he either leaves property or as I said, stays in the apartment, and there's no legal reason for me or the cops to enter.

Having been in similar situations, my lessons have taught me that I'm only one man who can do the best I can. I can't fix every problem and I can only help those who want to be helped.

It sounds like you've done all you can do. After her lease is up, I assume she may be getting another apt and taking him with her. In which case, you have done all you can legally do. All you can do is hope that his evil ways will catch up with him sooner than later and that the girl will end up graduating and marry a nice person.

Off topic, I think it's best that you not identify this lady. Sure, there is no last name, but a first name, college, and mentioning of her basket ball team can cause her to be called out with a little research. If the mods role with it, then it's alright with me.
