So when I checked my mail today, one of the letters was all a mess and half was torn off. They put it in a little bag that said, "We Care" and gives this huge explaination about how they try very hard to not damage my mail.

I guess that's why you have to buy insurance these days on things you send....

Did you think they process those things by hand?  Everything goes through a machine.  If it's an odd size or not properly sealed or bent/wrinkled to begin with, chances are it's going to jam up in the machine.

If you stop and think about the millions of pieces of mail that get processed each and every day without being damaged... it's pretty incredible.  And I think that you actually get a helluva lot of value for 41 cents.

Maybe next time, if something is important, you'll send it in a padded envelope or cardboard mailer?

How many pieces of damaged mail have you received in your lifetime?  Is this the first?  Maybe the second out of the hundreds of things that arrive in perfect condition?

'Scuse me, I gotta go to the store.  Seems we're out of cheese again.

I've never had a problem with the US Postal service.  Mind you, it helps to be a Canadian...

If in doubt, poke holes into the envelope and label them "FOR BEATHING, DO NOT OBSTRUCT".  I think that might ensure every package that manages to arrive, arrives safely...

And how much is paid for that piece of mail? If you want quality, then use Fed Ex, UPS, or a for profit carrier.

I sent a small wooden disk in an envelope and they sent it through the machine and the envelope arrived, but not the gift inside. I thought they'd have more sense than to try to run such a bulky piece of mail through the machine, but guess not.

Chicago has the worst service ...you'll be lucky to get your mail delivered before 7p some days.  other days they will skip delivering your mail.  complaining to them about mail not being delivered doesn't help - it takes them 2 days to address your complaint by phone.

the USPS is cutting back. i always put a return address- as they will OPEN letter if they cant deliver it.

the postmaster in my town of 12,000 admitted they eliminated 11 blue mail boxes and last year 12. orders from higher up.

id say service has slide. in the last town i lived in- they put up with me when i complained about laziness-- i knew the rules and held em to it.

In that case,  you need to speak with the postmaster at the post office that handles your mail.  If you get no satisfaction there, go further up the hierarchy.  Take action, rather than whining.

What's more amazing is that USPS made a profit for fiscal years 2004 and 2005 with record revenue of $70 billion in FY05 and $1.4 billion in revenue. The fact that USPS can turn a profit and still deliver your letter anywhere in the country for less than $0.50 is impressive to me. Consider the USPS delivered 212 billion pieces of mail for FY05, that's almost a quarter trillion pieces of mail; with that many articles, some will inevitably be damaged.

I miss Saturday mail delivery.  That is the only downfall of being in Canada now.
