i dont understand the uproar..........please enlighten me......

this thing in louisiana

It is a mystery, I agree. I do not get it either.

ChicagoSwitchMal -> RE: maybe a hornets nest.....but (9/18/2007 6:57:49 PM)

 Jena High school I think. A noose was found hanging from a tree the black kids of that school sat under. 6 black kids beat a white kid for it.

Edited: This post wasn't completely accurate. see post below.

From http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/09/04/bell.jena.six/index.html?iref=newssearch

In September 2006, as the school year kicked off, a black Jena High School student asked the vice principal if he and some friends could sit under an oak tree where the white students typically congregated.

Out in the Open
A high school fight. A black teen convicted by an all-white jury. Soaring racial tensions.
[image]http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/base_skins/baseplate/corner_wire_BL.gif[/image]Told by the vice principal they could sit wherever they pleased, the student and his pals plopped down under the sprawling branches of a shade tree in the campus courtyard.
The next day, students arrived at school to find three nooses hanging from those branches.
"I seen them hanging. I'm thinking the KKK, you know, were hanging nooses. They want to hang somebody. Real nooses, the ones you see on TV, are the kind of nooses they were," Robert Bailey, 17, one of the Jena 6, told the syndicated radio show "Democracy Now!"
The school's principal recommended expulsion for those behind the nooses, according to the local newspaper in nearby Alexandria. Instead, The Town Talk reported, a school district committee overruled the recommendation and suspended three white students for three days for hanging the nooses, a gesture written off as a prank.
"Toilet paper, that's a prank, you know what I'm saying?" Bailey told the radio show. "Nooses hanging there -- nooses ain't no prank."
A series of scuffles ensued over the next three months as racial tension at the school became palpable.
The district attorney was summoned to address the student body. Off-campus fights were reported. Bailey said he had a beer bottle broken over his head in one incident, a shotgun pulled on him in another.
On November 30, someone torched the school's main academic building. The arson remains unsolved, but many suspect it's linked to the discord strangling Jena High.
The attack
Four days after the arson, several students jumped a white classmate, Justin Barker, knocking him unconscious before stomping and kicking him.
Parents of the Jena 6 say they heard Barker was hurling racial epithets. Barker's parents say he did nothing to provoke the beating.
Barker was taken to the hospital with injuries to both eyes and ears as well as cuts. His right eye had blood clots, said his mother, Kelli Barker. Justin Barker was treated and released that day.

Let the system work it out.The bigots have embraced this case and are fanning the flames as much as they can.

You can be a proud southerner, and have nothing to do with that mess.

Don`t let anyone tell you differently.

Peace.

Bell, Bailey, T. Shaw, C. Jones, B.Purvis and an unidentified juvenile -- all black teens -- were arrested and charged with attempted murder. The weapons used, according to the charges -- shoes. Their bails were set at between $70,000 and $138,000.
Only Bell remains in jail, on a $90,000 bond, and the judge has refused to lower it, citing Bell's criminal record, which includes four juvenile offenses -- two simple battery charges among them.

I heard that all charges have been dropped against Bell.I could be mistaken,but I believe I heard that in  an interview w/ Bell`s lawyer,yesterday.

ah.. DesireDeeva already answered my question :)

LadyEllen -> RE: maybe a hornets nest.....but (9/19/2007 3:01:58 AM)

For a start, the Commitee which overturned the expulsion of the noose hanging white students should be held totally responsible for all which ensued. This is poor leadership of a school and a poor example to the world in such a case, which they totally mishandled. Dismissal of the Committe would be a minimum in my book - I'd like to see them in the pillory.

Sadly, this is what happens when one gives racists an inch - they take a yard, their victims (if able) take two yards back and so it goes on. It has to be crushed, mercilessly, at the first hint.

High light shows  what happened in this incident then ?
Six on one as well.

I think a few people might have been upset by claims regarding this:

quote:

  Several days after the noose incident, a group of black students gathered and sat under the tree in protest. White students' parents called the police, and LaSalle County's white district attorney stormed the campus with armed police and gave an impromptu lecture to the black students who had gathered under the tree. "I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen," he reportedly told them

Forty years after the death of MLK, and Jim Crow still be alive and kickin.  There's some parts of the South where attitudes of institutionalized racism have not changed, and may not change in our lifetimes.   Other parts of it, everybody seems almost friendly.

Nearly any large city in this country, North or South, East or West,  has areas where blacks aren't going to be made to feel welcome, and areas where whites aren't going to be welcomed.  In parts of the South, its more than that. It's certain types of behavior that is not welcomed, both traditionally and currently.  Behavior that is quite normal for the whites but gets the blacks in trouble.  Like sitting under a certain tree.  Or voting, or driving a nice car, or dating a white woman.

To the OP, you don't understand why it bothers people because your history does not include having  to fear being lynched, for sitting under the wrong tree or using the wrong drinking fountain.  Or registering to vote.

The closest you will be able to come to that experience is to go live for a while in a fundamentalist Muslim country.

ill pass on the different country.......i like this one

and i think the kid(s) that hung the noose should have been expelled.........but i still find the retribution to have been excessive....

folks are doing peaceful marches for the dudes in jail......if the dudes in jail had done a peaceful march, or used other avenues to express their distaste and dissatisfaction with the actions of the white guy, they wouldnt be in jail, and my sympathy would be with them entirely.....

as it stands, im torn......

I agree with you. Nothing justifies that attack.

However, the authorities are overlooking the fact that this latest incident is simply an escalation of a series of fights that have been going on between these two groups of kids for months.

Yeah, I think the black kids ought to be in jail ... but so ought most of the white kids. But the former are treated as criminals and the latter as innocents.

Termyn8or -> RE: maybe a hornets nest.....but (9/23/2007 8:13:33 AM)

Oh boy.

I got the shit beat out of me in school by a bunch of Blacks. There were never any charges, and I put a quick stop to it by carrying scissors, a quite effective weapon. Times were different then though.

Now we have killings over shoes, and damnear a federal case out of a schoolyard fight.

If I were the principal of that school after seeing those nooses, I would assemble the whole student body, tell them don't do anything just watch right now, and I would've cut the tree down.

I would insist that every student be there and then say "Get this straight, you do not own this tree nor the ground on which it stood. You have shown insensitivity and inhumanity. This school is for humans. Everyone is not equal, OK, but everyone has the same rights. Those who put those nooses there showed their inferiority by resortig to such a stupid tactic. Now we all have equal rights to sit under that tree, NONE. Are you happy now ?". Something like that.

Perhaps then it would be White students doing the beating, and it would never have made the news. What's more, I am not very impressed with the people up in arms over the probably overwritten charges against these Black students. If the races were reversed, Blacks would still be heard. Usually Whites do not condone gang beatings. If six White kids beat the living shit out of a Black kid for something as stupid as this, I would lend them no support whatsoever. I, as a White Man do not condone mob rules, but I can't say that for others, regardless of race.

The mob mentality, like a pack of wolves or a herd of some animals, that is not for us humans. We must rise above it all or drown in our own shit. All these kids are not taught right, and likely neither were any of their Parents (perhaps I shouldn't have capitalised in this instance). The noose hangers as well as the ass kickers are defective in their upbringing. They have absolutely no cohesion to the human race nor any form of empathy or compassion. They are territorial like animals. This is a disgrace to us all, on both sides of the issue.

And it's a goddamn shame that many of them never grow up. Look around you, drive on the freeway, get in line somewhere. People generally want to get ahead of the others. They take enormous risks for little or no gain.

Perhaps we should sterilize everyone at birth for about five years. Then, instead of children being thrust into overcrowded school with which they have trouble coping, we would see them value each other. Try to get along.

I hate to bring it up, but it is in the Protocols "Every Man would be a dictator if he could". I don't fucking care if the Protcols are fake, if you want to dispute them, do it on a point by point basis. That document has as much wisdom in it as the Bible, the Koran, whatever. I don't care who wrote it, it is true.

Each person craves power, but few know how to attain it properly. If you are a leader you will attract followers, I know this firsthand. But it doesn't seem like leading, it feels more like a responsibility. Those who use force to gain control have no real power. My people are loyal to me, beyond the law, even to the death. When you use force or fear to get control you always have to watch your back. True leaders do not need bodyguards or armies.

Shit like the subject of this thread is basically a bunch of animals fighting over their turf. Execute them all we don't need them. I don't need them on the same planet as the kids my friends raised painstakingly to be human. Yes they have erred, but not like this.

I have had firsthand experience with gangs, you get any one of them alone they are not so brave. This is totally animal, did the White kids and the Black kids want to sit under the tree at the same time ? They will probably all grow up to be adults who will kill for a parking space. You see, in my view, the nooses were as bad as the beating, it is all the same thing. Turf.

The human race should be out of that stage before they even go to school. They think they own that fucking tree ? Who owns the tree ? If none of these students paid for the tree, who the fuck do they think they are ?

We have the ability to mature as children, even by age five or so if things go right. Being territorial is OK, as long as your name is on the deed. But many are raised by people who have not grown up themselves. Some of us are very lucky. Some are not.

The OP states straight up she is a southern girl born and raised or something like that. But she did not use the N word or the J word, why ? I suspect she is a human being who enjoys the company of others, even if they are not quite her model of perfection. That, in my view, is the definition of human. Please try to teach the children this.

Be well.

T

EPGAH -> RE: maybe a hornets nest.....but (9/23/2007 8:13:36 AM)

Ok, but assuming it IS "just an escalation"...Does that mean that when the 6 thugs are released, if a group of 36 (since we have to maintain that 6-to-1 ratio, otherwise this would be a clear-cut case of "mob attack") overpowers and beats down the Jena 6, will the self-proclaimed Civil Rights watchdogs demand THOSE 36 be released, since they were only defending themselves from racial encroachment, or something, or will they be a "group of white thugs ascting with clear and overpowering force"
Please tell me, how many X does it take to beat up a Y?

In my opinion, the problem with the US is that everything turns to race, and is used as an excuse for one thing or another, no matter what the color of the person involved. However I think this is overblownm it is a school yard fight, kids always fight....no one died or came close to it from my understanding of the articles on this. Both behaviours are wrong and based on hate...the one who is ultimately at fault is the school administration who don't give a damn on integrating the kids, on teaching them patriotism and care for their country and their fellow Americans, like teachers in the old days. I also hate this whole civil rights movements trying to excuse people who have done wrong as if they are innocents, when in this case they beat someone. Yeah I know this will bring in a lot of whinning, just adding my two cents.
