Karma has as much to do with the mind which directs the actions of a being, as with the actions themselves. A selfish mind is also one which directs selfish actions, which are often at the expense of others. A selfless mind is also one which directs selfless actions, which are often for the benefit of others. Naturally, the vast majority of beings act selfishly, since as animals and plants they have little concept of selflessness. Meanwhile most human beings have a concept of selflessness since this is taught by their religions at the most basic levels, but prefer to often ignore such an idea because the basic level of understanding which is taught, in the form of directives, prohibitions and commandments, is insufficient in itself, and found to be inadequate by reference to the world. Perhaps more helpful would be the idea that a negative mind attracts negativity, whilst a positive mind attracts positivity. Its really only with an understanding of what we are and what the cosmos is and how it works and why, that any useful discussion of karma can be undertaken. It is not about being "good" or "bad" or even "good" or "bad" consequences. E
