Damn.......... woke up a couple of minutes ago, and we have a Hurricane coming onshore directly on top of us.

Thankfully, it's a weak Category 1, not a devastating one like Rita.

Yes, it's not bad, camille. If he's in Houston, then he's on the "good" side of the storm. It was supposed to come onshore down by him, but it kept going north last night, and kicked up from a tropical depression to a hurricane in just a few short hours. I hate these things.

It should go quickly, they say the worst will pass in about 1-3 hours. Sustained winds of near 80 mph right now and quite a bit of rain.

Waves to Level.  It's died down a lot here (Level and I live about 30 minutes from each other).  The winds were high and lots of rain, but I don't think we're flooded.  I'm worried about work though ... I work on the west side of the big town between us.

Have no fear, camille65....I live in NW Houston and I was up till after 4 am today and nothing much happened during that time.  If we had any wind or rain from Humberto from 4 to 6:30 am, it wasn't enough to wake me up

Just as general info for camille and any other interested ...

Hurricane Humberto was a Category 1 storm and barely made that before he made landfall a little bit east of High Island, Texas at about 2:00 a.m. this morning.  Highest sustained winds were about 80mph but the storm is very compact and those winds extended only about 15 miles out.  The storm is moving on a northeasterly track at about 7 mph.  The storm has passed over southeast Texas and is now moving through Louisiana.

A 70-year-old Bridge City man died when his carport collapsed on him.  One family still residing in a FEMA trailer from Hurricane Rita two years ago was inside their home when high winds blew the trailer over.  Approximately 100,000 people are without power over the area.  It could be as long as two days for some to have power restored.  Most schools in the area have been closed, including Lamar University.  Beaumont city officials are asking that people stay inside and don't venture out unless it is absolutely necessary.  There are power lines and trees down and flood waters are not receeding as quickly as officials would like.

Lousiana's govenor has declared a state of emergency.  The Lake Charles Civic Center has been made available as a shelter for those who may need escape possible flooding or power outages.  Vermillion Parish has made sandbags available.

Just a quick update: I'm alive, which is a good thing. My home is alive, more or less, except for the central air unit. I think it's the transformer outside, keeping fingers crossed.

It's hot!

Quick! Call FEMA and tell them that you need emergency funding for and oxygen/nitrogen temperature control unit!

Seriously, glad to hear you’re okay. It may have been a category one but any hurricane is nothing to sneeze at.

I appreciate the good thoughts, feastie, Marc, cyndi, thorn, FC, Rich, dark, seeks, & camille. The storm is on record as being the fastest developing hurricane, I think.... went from a tropical depression to a hurricane in less than 18 hours. We still don't have AC , but it could be much worse.
