It's a little mind-blowing that these two football teams, due to square off next Saturday, are so...... terrible.

Duke vs Baylor would hold as much promise.

The Irish and Wolverines are the two most-winningest programs in NCAA football history.

11 consensus titles for Notre Dame, 2nd highest winning percentage all-time, 7 Heisman Trophy winners, etc.

11 claimed titles for Michigan, highest winning percentage of all time, 3 Heisman winners, most victories all time, etc.

At what point are we allowed to start blaming the coaches?  Last week we were saying that Michigan lost to Appalachian State because they must have underestimated their opponent.  This week it looks like they lost for much simpler reason: they suck.

Hell has to have frozen over when these 2 storied programs are both winless at the same time.

As for Michigan, there is no excuse for them to suck like this.  I heard this morning that the players have basically given up on Lloyd Carr because they know he is going to get fired.

As for ND, they made their own bed a long time ago when they decided they didn't want to join a conference thus scheduling all of their own games and they sold their soul to the devil to have their games exclusively covered by NBC.  The problem with that is that they still think they should be playing the top teams even though they don't have the same quality players those top teams do because those kids go to the top schools because they want the chance to win championships and that won't be happening at ND any time soon.

I watched both the Michigan/Oregon game, and most of the Irish/Penn St game, and they both looked horrible. Michigan's D was a joke, but the offense, supposed to be their saving grace, looked as bad. Henne and Hart are good players, and will be in the NFL next year, but the rest..... phew.

Notre Dame is even worse. They looked like a high school team out there at times.

I think both Weis and Carr are good coaches, but yeah, the buck has to stop with them, at least to a degree.

There's a lot of talk about how the lower number of scholarships is having an impact on parity. Maybe so...... Auburn lost to South Florida last night, and Akron almost beat Ohio St.

Well, I don't have a problem with ND being an independent, and if they don't improve, they may not have to worry about being on NBC much longer. They are supposed to have very high standards academically, which keeps some kids from playing there, but so does Penn St, and Paterno has them turned around. Hell, Florida St lets anybody play, and they're another perennial power that's stinking up things.

And this is all so funny, really.  Who to root for turns into who the heck cares?

Voting runs until Saturday; she was trailing last time I looked, though.

That pair from WV are tough, Bounty. And yeah, LSU ripped the Hokies a new one, but until USC stumbles, they'll hang on to the top spot.

Texas..... every time I put that game on, McCoy would throw an interception lol. Thankfully, they turned it around.

Well, that 85 limit has been around for over 10 years so there's more to it than that. USF coach Jim Leavitt gets the kids who are left over after UF, the crimiNoles and thUg U take their picks, yet he knocked off WVU last year and Louisville the year before that -- I think he's just a good coach. But although some decent players are trickling down to USF, there's no way they should be getting all the way down to D1AA Appalachian State with only 60 scholarship players to make them competitive with Michigan -- hats off to them, but Michigan deserves scorn for losing that game.

Michigan and ND are cherry picking from among the best recruits around the country, but they're just stinking up the field. Michigan has already rolled over and given up on this season; I think Charlie Weis was so busy padding Brady Quinn's stats while beating up on the service academies last year that he forgot to give playing time to younger guys so they'd enter this year with some experience.

ND fired Ty Willingham after his 3rd year; I wonder how they'll justify keeping Weis without looking like racists.

Speaking of Willingham...... he's got the Huskies playing some good football. They've thumped Boston College and Boise St. so far. If he ends up in the Rose Bowl, and ND ends up winless, the screams will be heard across the land

Yeah, I've been really surprised by Washington.  They look bowl-bound for sure.  In fact, they have a case for being a Top Ten team right now.

ND is not the same operation that it used to be. About a decade ago it imposed ivy-leaguish standards university wide, and the admissions dept in concert with this, starting imposing stricter scruntity on football recruits. Lou Holtz left right at about that time.

Wise observers of ND have since said, "You can't be Princeton M-F and Oklahoma on SAT."

Charie Weis will not be able to turn it around there and vie for the National Championship, but I'm sure he'll field some good teams.

I'm curious to see if Brady Quinn can do for the Browns what he did for ND.

Obviously Michigan was highly overrated this year and we have to accept it probably is going to be a bad season.

Personally I take comfort that so many people take joy in our struggles and I take comfort knowing it will only be temporary!

Go Blue!

I like that Princeton quote, cb

Quinn should make a very solid QB; not great, but build a team around him, and he can help them to a title.

Yeah, don't expect Michigan to stink for long .  The Big Ten looks to be Wisconsin's or Penn St's, this year; Ohio St, and Purdue, hard to say how good they actually are.

quote:

Injured Michigan quarterback Chad Henne will not play against Notre Dame.

Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr did not provide a timetable for Henne's return, listing him Monday as week-to-week. The senior was knocked out of the second half of Saturday's 39-7 loss to Oregon.

Freshman Ryan Mallett will start against the Fighting Irish on Saturday at home in a matchup of storied teams with 0-2 records.

For the entire long and storied history of Notre Dame football, they have NEVER been in a conference and they have ALWAYS scheduled their own games. The play a national schedule featuring teams all across the country. NBC sought them out because they have the highest ratings of any NCAA team week in and week out. They get no special coverage other than the games are on NBC six times a year. NBC even has a USC Trojan for a color comentator calling the game!

And FTR, only Notre Dame's home games are on NBC.

It is a good deal for the school and a good deal for the network so why is it a "deal with the devil?"

Quinn will be one of the top 10 QBs in the NFL.

Best QBs now are:

Peyton Manning
Tom Brady

-------

Carson Palmer
Drew Brees
Ben Roethelsberger
Matt Hassleback

------

On the rise:

Matt Leinhart
Jay Cutler
Tony Romo (??)

---------

To me, Quinn is in the class with Brees and Palmer.
