I wonder how rich Carlin has gotten by railing against the system.

When it comes to attacking the rich and powerful, the truth is that you can either loose or join'em. As much as I agree with Carlin, the only thing one man can do is become rich and powerfull himself. France had its revolution where Lords and Royalty where killed just so new lords and richmen can arise from the ashes. The only way is to beat this system is to join it and come out top dog regadless of who you have to step on and manipulate to do it.

The 'American Dream' is certainly possible.  It just includes working hard, and not getting drunk every weekend, which appears to be rather difficult for many.

Some particularly lazy individuals these days seem to confuse "the American Dream" with "being lazy, drunk, high, and rich".

These days compared to when?  Drug and alcohol use has declined steadily over the last 40 years.  Be that as it may, there have always been drunks, junkies, and lazy bums and there always will be.  I realize you are young, and I am sure it seems like everyone is doing nothing but getting high and drunk.  But I assure you, most of those people will calm down in a few years.  There is nothing wrong with enjoying your youth and throwing caution to the wind.  Enjoy your youth while you still have it; there is plenty of time to be serious and worried when you get older.

The American Dream means something different to everyone.  Carlin is talking about the loss of freedoms we have experienced in the last 50 years.  Some of those losses were intentional and some of them were just incidental results of technological advancement.  The American Dream to me is not a cozy little house with a white picket fence filled with big screen televisions, gadgets of all kinds, and the chance to play golf on Sundays.  The American Dream is being free and your own man.  It's charting your own destiny without hindrance from other people's ideas of what you should be doing.  Unfortunately Carlin is right about the increasing loss of that dream.  Unlike him I don't fault the rich, I fault all of us for giving a little freedom here and a little freedom there for the sake of security.  Life is supposed to be dangerous, that is what makes it so damn fun.

Durus:
Are you suggesting that only the poverty stricken may speak the truth?
George Carlin is a man who speaks the truth and gets paid for doing so but instead of commenting on the validity of his statements you seek instead to insinuate something nefarious in his motives because he makes money from his chosen profession.

For your statement to be true we should be able to verify it by looking at a list of the 1% of this country who control 90% of its wealth and note who has migrated there from the ranks of the not wealthy.

Still have to love Carlin....he says what we all wanted to say, or at least have thought, and gets away with it beautifully.
