Correct, but that is what we're talking about, word-for-word content lifted from another site in place of ones own content. I see a lot of poetry lifted from elsewhere and it should be properly credited to the author.

If I wrote a report on a historically significant person, I'd put it in my own words. I would quote a source to lend validity to my own work, or I'd be quoting said historical figure directly.

While not technically correct, I see people often quoting content lifted from elsewhere, blogs in particular, and they use italicization, coloring, or a different type font. Either way, it really needs to be linked back to the source. I always credit the author AND publisher, as the author is NOT always the holder of the copyright.

I don't think I know who Tom Rush is,
but plagarism as public display? Thats is just so stupid. Maybe she just didn't have the wherewithal to deal with royalties.

Interesting,

Several issues in play here. One being the plagiarism, second being her anger at being found out, vs the fact she boosted someone elses hard work.

I can't speak to the way it works in the States, but in Canada you have anything you write is copywrited the moment you write it. Therefore stealing from a Canadian's blog or profile is illegal.

I wouldnt call it illegal per say, possibly subject to a civil lawsuit at some point. Blog posts are essentially thoughts and rants. Professional bloggers use accredited web publishing companies like Word Press to authenticate their works.

I can take any blog post you make and copy into my own blog if I choose. If I credit you in good faith, there is nothing you can do except waste money on attorney fees if you choose. You'd have to prove some level of intent on my part to deceive a reader or profit from your work.

Research papers, poetry, short stories, novels, scripts all have potential commercial value, blogs do not. If you are an aspiring author, do NOT publish your works for instance, on a myspace blog. If you do, you do so at your own risk.

Actually, intellectual property has pretty strong protection provided that you can prove A) it's actually yours and that B) they took it without asking. Be careful what you steal; you never know when someone might give a damn.

I think we're diverging from the intent of the OP:

Agreed, but giving a damn usually means some sort of commerical value in which to protect. Winning a lawsuit is one thing, trying to get water from a dry well is another.

A lot of it is the lack of creativity and people who "know from nothing." If you're stuck with the need to write the bdsm equivalent of "Analytical Algebraic Topology of Local Euclidian Methodization of Infinitely Differentialable Reimanian Manifold" than you may want to call out Nicolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky (AIY!)

Or have your neighbor Cyrano write you profile for you.
