As I've grown through the years and entered my "tribe", I now don't always assume that a bottom is a sub or slave and a Top is a Dom or Master. For me, there are three sets of roles (and you've heard me say something similar to this before, probably):

Top/bottom:physical BDSM roles.
Dom/sub: Mental, authority transfer roles.
Master/slave: Spiritual, surrendering roles.

So, I wouldn't necessarily see that Ds relationship components MUST be part of a BDSM scene. It would depend on the people.

I enjoy the mental aspects of BDSM and connect with D/s more than SM. I usually do not play at play parties and go with the intention to socialize. I am more likely to do service oriented activities such as provide a foot rub or fetch drinks. When play occurs, it is run by the domme and it has D/s overtones for me. My interest to engage in SM play at the party is more as part of a dance towards D/s (or possibly towards exhibitionism) than for the sake of sensation. I happily go into a submissive role with the domme for those moments.

Cheers,

Sea

I don't really make distinctions any more. We pretty much suspend our disbelief  to engage in a fantasy lifestyle anyhow.

It's whatever you want it to be at any moment.
