I am an avid reader... I love books. Sometimes I come across a book that deserves to be mentioned. Some of my favorites are: The Giver by Lois Lowry- I read this book in 8th grade, and it has stuck with me. I think its a part of me forever... Its just one of those books that I think everyone should read. Its an amazing story. 1984- This is a truly amazing book... I read it my senior year of highschool and I fell in love. Its one of those books that's such a "must-read" that they make it part of the curriculum. The Lovely Bones by Alice Seabold- another amazing story, though my friends and I have come to the conclusion that the quality of this story, and the great detail... was probably an accident, and that we're not likely to see another story from this author that measures up to this one. The Pact, My Sister's Keeper, and Ninteen Minutes (three separate titles) By Jodi Picoult- Everything by this author is an amazing read... Its very law based... everything ends up in a court room, but the story outside of that is always so life changing... So... what are YOUR favorite books? What about them makes them your favorite? Maybe we'll be able to pull some titles from this potental list for our own collection. Its always fun to share a good book.

I have to many favs to list and why, but one was Anita blake vampire hunter series, and I liked it because, it was a good mix of fantasy with a good mix of mundain, and cause some of the ocasional sex scenes were really very hot. Lovely bones I disliked very much though.

The Giver is my ALL-TIME favorite book, too! Followed closely by 1984. Good tastes! One I LOVE that you didn't mention, however, is Ava's Man by Rick Bragg. (I have a copy autographed by the author! He liked my name so he signed it, ha!) I highly suggest it.

That is one of my favorites too, for the same reasons and I like that she is a strong female character with interesting moral dilemmas although I have to say some of the books didn't have much of a story. My other fav is the Wheel of Time series. He pulls in bits and pieces of all different kinds of cultures and religions, colorful characters, and has many subplots along with the major plot. He also mixes in a sense of ancient civilizations along with prophecy, romance, danger, intrigue and the supernatural. The only thing is that it's a long series with a lot of time inbetween so it can be easy to forget who's who and some of his books seemed to introduce more subplots than resolving/progressing existing ones. I also loved To Kill a Mockingbird - oddly enough, never had to read it in school, but a good friend said it was her favorite book and I can see why. The movie is great, too.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini . For all you BDSMers out there (most especially the subs, massochists, those who are bored with their lives and need abuse, slaves and wanna-be slaves, It will change your perspective on BDSM as a hobbie, lifestyle, and sport. Guaranteed. It's so engrossing the book, plus contemporary... very fascinating read. It could be the next Gor series but with a horribly realistic and earth-bound twist. Who knows, I almost think you will retreat back into vanilla after reading this book! [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image]

my favorite books are a series of books written by Diana Gaboldon (sp). They're the "Outlander" books, about a woman who goes back in time through some standing stones to the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie. They are great books if you like historical romance.

I am reading one book every 5 to 7 days right now - Dirk Pitt novels by Clive Cussler, they are addicting, well written and easy to get into. Its like James Bond but with an oceanagraphic twist and more mystery; MJ got me hooked [and takes FULL responsibility for this new addiction and my lack of sleep], I have finished 6 as of this moment and will finish the other tomorrow and start on another by the end of the day. I am a reading nut at times, some fav authors - Anne Rice, Mary Higgens Clark, Steven King and Cussler at the moment. Every author is different. I am still workign through "Satanic Verses" which is complicated and intriguing, so its a slow go.

Cry to Heaven (or maybe A Cry to Heaven?) by Anne Rice The story of a beautiful young italian boy with a truly stunning singing voice who was seized by his older brother in the night, castrated and sent to school to learn to be a castrati. Very compelling and rich. Contact by Carl Sagan Chronicles the life of a young woman who touches space. Intricate and engrossing. All of the Eve Dallas books by J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling The Lake House and Feather on the Wind (I think is the title) by James Patterson Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolin I could go on and on and on ...

Since 1984 is getting all the attention, I'd throw in Animal Farm. Better, in my opinion.

I have too many to list. I like to read the "O Henry prize-winning Short Stories" books (published in a separate volume each year, with stories by amazing new and old short story writers, and avialable at Barnes & Noble). Given how hectic life has been lately, short stories have been more satisfying. - Susan

The Harry Potter Books are very good, I love Stephen King, Anne Rice and older Dean Koontz. I have Eragon and Eldest both in the house, bought for my younger UM but I read them first.

How cool is it to see so many of my favorites listed here? I've read all of the Eve Dallas books by JD Robb. If you like futuristic society and bizarre murder mixed with bad ass cop and a little romance, take a look at that series. I faithfully follow Anita Blake and Harry Potter. I read a lot of brain candy...romance, science fiction fantasy, and lately, a lot of vampire novels (Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Series is excellent and about to become an HBO series)...but I feel I need to get into more classics. I've also been saying this for many years now.

Oh sure! Some romance novelists have added the paranormal to their plots, spinning off a whole new subgenre - romantic vampires. Mary Janice Davidson, Michele Bardsley, Katie MacAllister and Madelyne Baker are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head. I believe the best of the bunch are the ones that are more dark. Charlaine Harris, Laurell K. Hamilton, L. A. Banks and Kim Harrison all have excellent on-going series with feisty heroines and super sexy supernatural heros. I would also recommend Hamilton's Merry Gentry series which deals with a fairy princess trying to get pregnant to gain her aunt's crown or at least keep her homicidally insane cousin from becoming king. Lots of group sex with all kinds of supernatural creatures in that one.

Grimms fairy tales is my favorite. i read it in spanish as a child and later in english. but really i love all books . does any one remember the episode in twilight zone "Time Enough" ? i still have nightmares .

For plane flights, I always have a copy of John Fowles' The Magus. Just never seems to get old no matter how many times I read it. I've been reading Neal Asher's Polity Agent series - interesting hard-scifi/cyberpunk with a touch of Fleming-esque intrigue. I prefer the Fleming Bond novels and stories to any of the movies - though this latest movie was pretty good, even with the slightly anachronistic recipe for The Drink (Kina Lillet hasn't been made since the 60s, you'd use Kina Blanc instead)... I love Andrew Vachss' work, but every time I read a Burke novel I keep writing fanfic in my head that winds up having Burke come to his senses in a mental hospital, realizing that he's a complete psychopath. Not as well known, but I like Mark & Ann Danielewski's writing. Same with Tony Bourdain's Bobby Gold stories... What makes this list so sad: my current reading - US Tax Code Revisions 2007. Augh!
