Just remember after they raise a generation like that, we can never fight another war.

OH god, THIS is why we homeschool our kids.

At one school they attended, you were not allowed to RUN on the blacktop. There are INSANE rules about how to safely use playground equipment, and they are not allowed to TOUCH THE WALLS in the school.

Oh god, dont get me started on public school in my area. I had a pretty darn good education from them in my day but it is all crap now (in some areas). I wrote a Looooooonnnnnngggggg letter to the school board and the teach and principal about certain issues, and got NADA as a response. We yanked em out again and will keep em out til we can afford a private school.

My 5 year old got in trouble for hugging.
My 8 year old got suspended for 3 days TWICE because during very MILD horseplay with another CONSENTING child, the other child got scratched. No blood or anything, a scratch. It is an automatic suspension for making a mark on an other kid. And lets not forget that they do not allow even elementary school children to make up their missed work. This resulted in my straight A kid bring home C's on his report card for all the zeros. HE'S EIGHT!

Dont ask me why my 5 yr old got suspended for 10 days once.

I am going to go have a shot of vodka now, just thinking about all this.....

when I was growing up, we rode bicycles without helmets, rode skates and skateboards without protective gear and played army with BB guns set at the lowest setting...no pellets were allowed either. we used to wrestle on our back yards and sometimes even in our front yards. we'd also play football and baseball in a cow pasture, play street hockey and a bunch of other things...all without protctive gear...those were the days.

<Edited to add...>

I almost forgot, we also used to use a rope to swing on and get as high as we could get before releasing ourselves onto a pond that wasn't too awfully deep...it was fun.

Casie -> RE: School bans game of tag at recess (8/31/2007 12:09:47 PM)

You have got to be kidding me . Tag, was so darn fun. I never remember anyone being seriously injured!!! Heck I play tag with my 3 yr old around the house and out in the yard almost on a daily bases. This is exacally why we will be homeschooling. I found a great group of homeschooling moms who hqave scheduled PE and socilaziation. If they say no tag I think I  might barf all over them. It makes me sick that parents are so over protective, and schools are so scared of being sued, and school violence that the kids can't even play tag!! Well I suppose gong by them saying it incourages violence, seems like a pretty safe, healthy  way to release "violent" emotions as a kid. If kids don't have an outlet it's bound to boil over in other parts of their lifes. Further more kids need this exercise. Before you know it there will be no recess because the school will say it's too much of a liability.

MistressDaisy73 -> RE: School bans game of tag at recess (8/31/2007 12:40:34 PM)

My personal opinion is that the States need to start exerting their actual powers FOR the kids, not against them. But, no, like everything these days, the innocent get punished for the guilty. If the State did not give into the threat of lawsuits... if the judicial system actually was even SORTA fair.... the frivilous  (I say FRIVILOUS) law suits would have no chance in hell and then the liability and costs would go down tremendously for the schools, kids would have more exercise and behave better, making, one would hope, less insane rules IN the schools, giving the kids more room to breathe, helping them learn and think for themselves, which in turn will help them be adults who might take responsibility for their OWN actions, which might help put folks into power who give a damn, are fair , and I dunno Honest, and give a rats patootie.....

That was a run on sentance to illustrate the trickle down effect I think is part (I do say PART) of what is wrong with schools today. More money per capita, even taking inflation into consideration, is being poured into schools and the results are that kids parents have to buy the SCHOOLS supplies, teachers go broke trying to get their classes things, etc. AND back even 20 years ago, the teachers salary was a much higher percentage of the published funding that went to the schools to begin with.

Ok, now I need a tylenol.... LOL

And what politicians, bureaucrats, or educators are we thinking would do themselves out of a career by allowing this to happen?

LOL Of course, that is part of my point. :) I do think there might be one or two out there... but SOMETHING might happen if enough parents start taking control of their schools and schooling. It is a pain in the rear to homeschool 3 kids, and I know others that have done  it with many more. But even my teacher mother has to admit that if she had seen some of the thing we have these days, she would have pulled em out too. Being aware of what happens is step one.

Ya know Ron, NONE of this surprises me!  [:D]

Hell, I slushed as a grown man in NY (quite drunk of course, but it reminded me of the Halcyon days)

We used to dive out of the tops of ancient willows in a rudimentary bungee jumping style and grab the weeping branches on the way down, that FUCKIN HURT when you missed--- and usually took a day or two to screw up the courage to do it again.

Scrape your knee be damned!!!!

Oh my gosh, Popeye, were you skipping school to watch a baseball game!
And eating candy rather than low carb, non-sugar, gluten free snacks!
However did you manage to grow up?  [sm=hewah.gif]

"Tag?"
When we were kids we'd be "slushing" behind cars in winter.
We'd skip school, hop a freight train and sneak into Fenway Park to watch a ballgame in spring and fall.
We made Tarzan swings and kids would fall off them 20 feet and break their arms.
We'd go door to door collecting money for the "Boy Scouts" and spend it on candy.
"Tag?"

lazarus1983 -> RE: School bans game of tag at recess (8/31/2007 3:09:09 PM)

Unfortunately, another perfect example of cause and effect.

The cause is the ever-hovering threat of a lawsuit against a school. The effect? Crazy rules like this. In order for a school to protect itself against lawsuits, it must take measures like banning tag. Any action that could potentially cause a lawsuit is therefore being systematically taken out.

It's a way for the schools to cover their own asses. I mean, how many kids are there in an average public school? 400? 500? That's 500 potential lawsuits just waiting to happen.

I'm not in any way agreeing with the public school's decisions, I'm just pointing out that they have a legitimate reason to do what they do.

red rover??? is that gone too?

It's getting ready to get the boot. There was aa incident a few weeks ago where a kids arm was broken in the result of not wanting to let go. Talk about will power and the desire to win.
