I was a Catholic School boy in the fifties, and I distinctly remember that paddlings and religion came from the same source.
For that reason - to briefly return to the OP's original question - I find "religious" scenes to be incredibly hot...and I don't think it's more offensive to "God" than routinely using Her name in vain: such as in the all-too-common "Oh my God!" or the internet abbreviation of "OMG".

i would not be comfortable with it, but that is just me. If you are comfortable with it, go for it, and more power to you. i really can not see the harm, as long as its just for fun. If you get to the point of trying to make statements about a religion with the play, then i would worry.
Also worry if the person next to you in the scene sudddenly gets struck by lightning.
