proudsub -> Hip Replacement (8/29/2007 1:08:06 PM)

I finally saw the orthopedic surgeon this morning and she agreed with me that i need a total hip replacement. It will be scheduled for late Oct. or early Nov. I've researched it pretty thoroughly but would love to hear anyone else's experiences with this. Thanks.

Ooops, this was supposed to be in "Health and Safety", sorry.

Alumbrado -> RE: Hip Replacement (8/29/2007 1:09:24 PM)

None personally, but friends of mine who have had them, resumed very active lives, reporting that the chronic pain had gone.

My mum was late 60's when she had this done and she sailed through it, her life has been improved so much since the operation...... just make sure you have all the things you need for when you return home.  Bath seat,  the gadget that makes the loo seat higher, the grabber so you haven't got to bend down, shoe horns, one of those things you use to put socks/stockings on if you cant bend and a seat/chair at the correct height - im sure ive missed some things but your occupational health person should organise it all for you.  I hope it goes well.

Thanks for the list. We've both been using a toilet seat riser for about 6 months now. I'll put out a list on freecycle for the other items. I've already done that for a walker. Daughter is at OT so she can help with my list.  When i've fully recovered Hubby will probably look into getting His done.  He is being very nice in letting me get mine done first LOL.

Do the exercise and therapy as instructed---that is key, otherwise you will freeze up--oh and give Master a list of HIS duties, sit back and enjoy!!

I also have some friends who have had it done and are very happy to have the pain gone and to be active again, i can't wait.  I do know one person who got an infection about 2 yrs later and had to have it redone.

OMG He doesn't have a clue how to do anything around the house. He is required to go to a 3 hr class with me so he will get an earful there. The last time i travelled without Him He went and bought new underwear instead of doing laundry, LOL.

free cycle rocks, I use them all the time for getting rid of stuff, and sometimes asking for items. I am currently getting rid of a huge amount of craft items, using freecycle.

Arthritis?

Yes, and my x-rays showed the other hip is bad too, as well as one knee.  Getting paid back for being so active when younger.[:o]

windchymes -> RE: Hip Replacement (8/29/2007 2:18:02 PM)

Good luck with everything, proudsub!  I worked in a physical therapy clinic for six years and saw many hip replacements come and go.  It's really tough at first, but it will be worth it in the end, you'll be like a new woman!  Just do the exercises and stretching like they advise, that's the most important thing.  And enjoy the pain meds! I've no experience in either hip replacements or physical therapy, so I've no unique or insightful tips to give (but the "do your exercises," refrain does sound prudent) so I’ll just say good luck.

cloudboy -> RE: Hip Replacement (8/30/2007 8:30:46 AM)

I'm a tennis player and a member of an aging tennis club. Several of the male players are 60 + years old.

Anyway, one friend of mine is now about 62, and his hip degenerated so badly he thought he might have to give up the game. First he stopped playing singles (his real passion), and then he had to forgo doubles. He also had trouble sleeping, and he was experiencing a fair amount of pain.

So, he got a hip replacement using some sort of advanced system (not sure what word to use.) After the recovery and rehabilitation, his tennis level shot up, and he was once again playing singles at a high level.

If you find the right doctor and right solution, I would say the upside is huge. My friend was very glad he did it. Other players I know less well have also reported positive results.

I'm sure tennis and training for it is what led to my arthritis. It's very hard on the joints.

I can't help with this, proud, as I don't know anyone who's ever had this surgery, but I wanted to offer you my best wishes for a successful operation and if you need anyone to help work your Pogo badges while you're laid up, just drop me a line.

Celeste
