Hi everybody:

I got an idea from another thread on the forums, so this is a poll-slash-request-for-feedback.

If you had a choice, would you work with or for other kinky folk in your area? For example, I have editing and project management skills in the publishing industry, and I'm also a jewelry designer. Also, for example, I could use advice from a lawyer and a financial planner to help me manage my small business intelligently. If I could, I'd gladly throw my business to lifestyle people in my immediate area, but I don't know how to find them.

So how about a web site/blog site that helps U/us connect with each other for these vanilla type purposes? Not for advertising sexual or BDSM services, but the other stuff - if the site were structured in such a way to maintain privacy and discretion?

My entrepreneurial antennae are twitching. [:)]

Thanks!
~pmg

There are plenty of sites offering Kink Aware Professional Lists - depending on which country you reside.
Just google the words and they all pop up.  Alternatively, just say you are Kink Aware in your profile on whatever sites you frequent.  We do.

Depends on the person and type of lifestyle they lived and if it would affect their interactions with me.

toservez -> RE: Support your fellow kinksters! (8/29/2007 7:45:41 AM)

All things being equal I would love to support and help out people that live like I do as I think that is only natural but when it comes to important things my first criteria is who can help me the best and not how they live.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Support your fellow kinksters! (8/29/2007 7:58:40 AM)

Nope- I wouldn't NOT work with someone because they are kinky, but it would have no bearing on it one way or the other.

Have you seen what happens when kinky people fully knowningly try to work together for kinky purposes?  All the shit storms and drama that comes from that?  Election times alone...

Just because someone is kinky doesn't mean I actually have anything in common with them or that I want to socialize with them.  Since I much prefer to keep my private life and work life totally separate, it really wouldn't make much difference and I'd be annoyed if a co worker tried to make buddies with me JUST because we happened to both be kinky.

As Dark already noted (see???) there are lists already for professionals to advertise their business as kink aware and offer services to people who need them.

I do love it when other people use, and understand the phrase "all other things being equal"....

First priority goes to the need at hand.  If that can be adequately satisfied, then it might tip the balance between two choices, all other things being equal.

Of course, in my case, it might also tip the balance if one person is a she and the other a he, or one choice smiles a lot, and the other doesn't, or any other number of variables and factors...

I tend to agree with LA.

Just because I share an interst in kink, doesn't mean I have a driving urge to invite everyone who can swing a paddle to my house.  I honestly find I don't have a great deal in common with most other 'kinksters'; but the few that I do click with, I seem to really click with.

When I need a service or good, I usually approach it from the 'most bang for the buck' mentality.  If a kinkster can offer that, great; but I don't consider their inherent kinkiness to contribute to that bang factor.

No, too much risk of being outed. Might not hurt them if they are, but would hurt us.

goodpet -> RE: Support your fellow kinksters! (9/3/2007 8:22:51 AM)

i would not just based on being kinky....

first i do not tell very many people i know in the lifestyle what i do, or at least who i work for.   I live in the DC area and a LOT of the kinky folks work for the government in one form or another and don't want that out.

but i would trade or barter non-employment skills.   We will help others and they come help us.. but it is with folks we know and not off a list.

I would never get anything accomplished if I worked with other kinky people!

MadameMarque -> RE: Support your fellow kinksters! (9/3/2007 9:18:43 AM)

It can be very useful, to have a resource list, for kink-aware professionals.  For many kinky people, this would be more for the purposes of finding services and goods, suitable to their particular needs.  And I would say, it would be helpful to have a centralized list to reference, even if that list was only links to locally-managed lists of professionals.

There is Race Bannon's, "Kink Aware Professionals," list.  That one is pretty well known.  I'm wondering if they would list other lists...?

DreamyLadySnow -> RE: Support your fellow kinksters! (9/3/2007 10:26:32 AM)

Most of the kinky people in my area do have full time jobs and yes, I have used them. At our last leather contest we used a kinky printer, and a leatherman designed the poster. I have a kinky lawyer friend who is going to do my will. There are lots of oportunities to support each other and I believe in doing it.
Well, as long as they are good at their job. No one needs a bad lawyer or home builder or what have you.

~FR~

I'm with OR. All things being equal, sure, I'd hire out someone who wasn't going to raise their eyebrows when they walked into the rec room to paint and took note of the rack on the wall then maybe later on, they'll buy some of my chainmail stuff. Never can do too much networking! Collarme.com is my homepage for the broadband, so that made it rather interesting when Comcast came out to change the modem and I forgot to change the homepage. ::chuckles:: No harm, no foul though. I just don't care about being out. I do care about selling the stuff we make though, so tit for tat as they say.
