I have a stalker of sorts, who visits the my website so often that they should be my number one customer. My online tracker tells me that this person has visited my site more than 70 times in 20 days! And has done so for a period of about 2 years. It's as if they're constantly checking in on me via my website.

I'd like to find a way to effectively ban a certain IP address from being able to view my website  (two IP addresses, in fact, since this person visits my site both from home and from work). Is this possible?

I need to protect myself. You never know when obsession can lead to something worse. And I'm clearly dealing with someone who's obsessed.

Thanks!

What sort of hosting service do you use for your website?  If it's a true hosted website, it's likely using cpanel.
going to http://yourwebsite.com/cpanel or http://yourwebsite.com/hostadmin will probably give you a menu (with your login).  Once you're there, you should be able to locate the 'ban' or 'blacklist' feature and add the ip addresses.

If you're using one of the very cheap or free hosting companies, it's likely that there is nothing you can do about it.

If you have your own server, type 'blacklist SERVERTYPE' into google, where SERVERTYPE is the webserver you are running (apache, IIS, etc).  that will show you how to do it.

My hosting server just pointed me to a how-to document for making an htaccess file to block out heavy access users. So I'm going to try that. If that doesn't work I'll attempt to write you again. Thanks!!

The problem is that the fucker can still use proxies if he is that obsessed with you.

Is he just visiting the site and nothing else?

No offense meant, but I'm getting a feeling that this may be a case of wishful thinking. The person in question (how do YOU know it's a man?) is merely looking at a website. It happens to be yours: what's the problem, exactly?

Withdraw the website and hey presto! C'est parti! C'est beau, la vie :-).

It's not often that I hear someone complain that someone is visiting their site. If you don't like people looking at your site why do you even have one?

This particular person is malicious. Enough said.

Thanks for those who had constructive advice.

Your OP didn't give any indication of maliciousness, only that a particular person visits your website a great deal.  There's nothing inherently wrong in that, other than it's a little obssessive.  You were looking for practical advice, other posts were made that did not offer what you were expecting.  That's part and parcel of posting on a public forum.
