When you meet people who you believe are obviously lifestyle, do you ever ask some careful questions?

Very rarely.  For one reason, the consequences of being wrong can be embarrassing for both.  For another, they may not want to be "out" like that.

It does no harm and much good to respect the privacy of others, and keep conversations in the vanilla world....vanilla.

Years ago a friend of mine gave me the ring which is described in The Story of O.   It wasn't a ring I wore as a sign that I was a sub, but because I loved the book.  Every once in a while it was responsible for a fabulous conversation. (Usually which started by a complete stranger asking if I was wearing underwear.)

i can't imagine ever being bold enough to approach anyone i saw out in the vanilla public and ask if they were in the lifestyle or not. but there was one time i tagged along on a business meeting with my Master, and the client he was meeting noticed my collar and complimented Daddy (not me) on it. the look he gave us and the fact that he never spoke directly to me were loud blaring signs that he was in the lifestyle. He and Daddy ended up getting into a discussion about the local M/s community, and within the hour he was inspecting me and using me on the conference room table. afterwards, their meeting continued as if nothing had ever happened, they talked business, and surprise surprise...Daddy got the contract. :)

I once ran into a member of my local organization in the cafeteria at my job. I wasn't sure whether to approach her as our faq says, when in public, never acknowledge someone you have seen at the meetings as they may not be out to whomever they are with. But then she saw me, we smiled at each other and ended up giving each other a hug and talking for about 5 minutes.

No, not usually.  I'm out, but most others in the pan and het communities.  While it would be relatively easy to reveal we're of the same clan, I choose not to place the other party in an uncomfortable position.

Not to hijack the thread, but didn't you leave the other day?

*looks at the door*  Is Todd back ?

Me?  What in the world are you talking about?

And if I were leaving, I sure as hell wouldn't bother announcing it to a community of people who don't know me and who could care less about my digital (or RL) existance.  I'd just freakin go.

I often meet people I've seen without clothes out in the world. And vice versa...

If it's a casual context, I'll discreetly do as OP did - some comment that is innocuous to people who don't know better. That collar is a necklace until you say otherwise... and that's about the extent of it. The blushing caused by that might even be too much and inappropriate... it's more a matter of feel.

Professionally, mum's the word. We don't know each other, even if just ten minutes ago I was felching you...

YMMV - but this has helped me live this long without massive trauma...
