'Just reading an article about him, and apparently he's playing for the Los Angeles team in New York this weekend; their average crowd is 12,000 and they've sold 60,000 seats for this match. 'Thing is a) He's well past his best b) He was never that good anyway. Why is he attracting such a crowd?

David Beckham...and his wife = *vomit*  he WAS the best soccer player but I rather look for other players now. Women love him cuz he's gotta pretty face..I don't understand why men love him

The couple are weirdos...obsessed with their looks and that they might get WRINKLES around their eyes n mouth..omg!!!
Damn they're deadly dramaqueens. I doubt they will live as a famous couple when they reach the age of 50..what they have achieved is absolutely nothing! They're despiteful in my opinion, I do admit beckham was a great soccer player but his wife..EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

NG......Laughs at "never that good"  In my opinion Beckham was one of the most skilful players we have had for many years, at least in midfield. a) You dont watch football b) Your`e a City fan

I agree he is well past his best, maybe for the last three seasons. Posh Spice and Beckham are making hay while they still can and good luck to them.

Well, she is a little bit ridiculous, but I'm not sure she warrants quite that amount of disgust ! She's just another overly skinny and rich soccer mom.

He was never, and never will be, anywhere near the top 10 best footballers in England, let alone wider Europe. He must have a quality spin machine over there in the US.

True. World cup 98, anyone? (Which France won. Just thought I'd slip that in here. ).

I live in Manchester, but I'm not from here, so neither City or United are my club. I reckon if you asked anyone who had been around the country with a club and knew a bit about football, they would tell you that Beckham is overhyped far beyond what he can do. He's a marketing man.

So they did. They struggled to get past Paraguay in the second round - they went through on penalties - I'd have laughed my cock off if Paragauy had knocked them out on their own patch. 'Wasn't to be, but never mind. I'm fairly sure they beat Italy on penalties, too, in the quarters. Lucky fuckers aren't they ;-)

I think you just answered your question about why 60K fans are attending the match.

We probably have the same problem with your sports, that you have with ours. I bet most Brits that follow American sports like basketball, know who LaBron James is. He is a basketball media icon. That said, there are probably ten players in the league better than him. I bet hardly anyone knows Tim Duncan, and if you count making your teammates better as a skill, he is probably the best basketball player on the planet.

NG i have followed football all my life, and all over the UK, not many players have the skill Beckham had with free kicks and crosses. Maybe he could have been quicker but his positional play was pretty good.

Who would you say the best English midfielder of the last ten years has been ?  i wouldnt argue if you put Gerrard and maybe Lampard above Beckham

Aye, but, the above isn't quite the same as your earlier comment. Yeah, he's quality from dead ball, but he has no pace...he'll never take his man on because he's not quick enough to get 'round him.

Scholes is a far better player.

Yet, here I am, part of the LA sports market, and I still don't give a shit about soccer.  The first I ever heard of him was in a movie about a Sikh girl seeking independence.

You know more than me, Rich......I wouldn't have a clue what film he was in. Did you enjoy it?

NG...Any club would love Scholes to be in their team. Over all though, who do you rate the best recent English. If i had to pick one for tackling and ability at free kicks i think i would go for Gerrard. I just hope he has an off day tomorrow and Lampard turns on the style.

We tend to produce far better defenders and keepers. 'At our best with our backs to the wall etc. Best recent? Probably John Terry.

Chelsea eh......league cup semi '85, fa cup quarters 92......those were the days.

'Remember the Quarter Final '92 a bit clearer because as I was 19 at the time.....it was switched to a Monday night because Sky had just taken over the reins. Anyway, 'round Chelsea's ground before the match was a nightmare, buses being set on fire and turned over.......bricks, bottles, everything flying around....even the women were hanging out 'the windows chucking stuff at us with "Fack off you Northern Cants" and all the usual London bollocks......Didn't help when we equalised with about 8 minutes left...the place went up.....dodging bricks all the way back to the coaches, and our coach had it's windows put out, so we had a 300 mile trip back to the North East with no windows in on a freezing Monday night......cockney wankers ;-) Beat them in the replay.......it was a right night.......'remember your man Wise scoring with about 5 minutes left, we were fuckin' gutted as we thought it was over and dreaming of the Semi (think on that Sunderland are shit now, but were even worse then, so it was a big thing for us)......then Gordon Armstrong popped up and scored the winner with about 30 seconds left...happy fuckin' days indeed.

'85, was too young to go down to London for the away match, but was at the home match when we beat you 2-0. 'Cracking night, our first final for 12 years......'meant a lot to us as it was at the height of the miners' strike, especially to knock out a London team. The way we celebrated that, you'd think someone had done in Thatcher ;-)

Edited to add: I fancy Liverpool to have a good season, bit test for them tomorrow.

I blame the soccer teams in Los Angeles for hiring him.  Rather than picking up good players and building a team, they hire has-beens like Beckham and Gretsky for a huge percentage of their payroll, then wonder why the teams never win.

Although I have never been much of a fan of primadonnas.

When I was coaching soccer I told my team I did not care about their own personal abilities or lack thereof, said they could either learn to play as a team and win, or play as an individual and lose.

We took second in the division.

I'm not really a great soccer fan - but i do support Liverpool - but i am delighted that the Beckhams have moved although the press here still seem to be a bit obsessed with them. They are way over-rated in my opinion. Then again - no one deserves that much publicity - i don't understand people being interested in them.
I am sooo looking forward to the Rugby World Cup!!
