As someone who has long believed that cats are the second coolest creatures on the planet, and having lost my own furry friend to liver cancer a month ago, I offer my deepest condolences. I would also like to offer a story I heard once that helps me through sad times.

A man had once performed a service for the gods and to reward him they offered him a gift of his choice. The man thought about it and then said, "I would like something that would remind me never to grow complacent during good times but will also give me hope during bad times. The gods conferred and then came back with their gift, a phrase – "this too shall pass."

Personally, I always though those gods were being a little cheap, but I believe the point is understood.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Dear Missy,

it will ease with time so just hang in there. You must grieve your losses so try to undrstand that and let it flow. Don't fight it. The Red Cross is the best. They helped me get through losing all to Katrina.

Everyone handles these stresses diffenently so whne the advice comes just smile and say thank you because they mean well but, really, haven't got a clue.

Don't worry about anything but youself rigtht now. Take care of yourself first everything else will take care of itself.

I'm sorry you couldn't get all your kitties out in time.

Oh Missy. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your kitties. However I'm relieved to hear you are safe and uninjured. My thoughts are with you and the recovery ahead.

It is very difficult to go back after a fire. I don't blame you for not wanting to do so.

I'm so sorry for your loss and I know how hard it is to lose a being you hold so dear. The storm was truly terrible and we were very worried about the woods right in back of our house attracting the lightening, but we were fortunate and only lost some trees and the power and nothing sacred so are feeling very blessed we were passed by. My heart to you and I hope your kitties are romping in heaven with their yarn thankful for the time they had you for their own.

I, too, am so sorry for your loss!  The only comfort I can offer is the thought that nothing happens by coincidence.  Everything happens for  reason.  And finally, as Tod McKuen wrote: "It's good sometimes to open your heart and let some hurt come in, it proves you are still alive".
 
It got me thinking about what I would do in the same sort of situation.  I have 3 dogs, 5 cats and a parrot.  Being caged, the parrot is the most vulnerable.  I'd get him first and leave the doors open.  I know the dogs will follow me and I'd have to hope the cats will use the door or pet door. 
 
There used to be a program with the fire department where you could put a decal on your door stating that there were animals inside to rescue in case of fire.
 
If nothing else, sweet lady, you have people thinking about what to do.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you... I can only imagine how devastating it really is. My condolences on loosing your babies.

Thank you soooooo much everyone for your very kind words and keeping us in your thoughts.
I am in contact with the Red Cross and they are helping me. Also a few other great agencies are there for me.
My niece who in April bought a new house so she is going to let us move in her other house temporarily until we can work through all the insurance stuff and sell the old house and land.
It's a four bedroom so that will give us plenty of room.
I am sleeping and eating better these last couple days and that has helped me emotionally.
I can't begin to say how much reading all your posts has uplifted my spirit!
I will ocasionally stop in and give you all an update.
Peace out and huggz to go all the way around to each and everyone one of you.
