I looked in to that one a little bit...biggest worry is that it would slip out, or have nasty side effects.  Or that I would always be able to feel the little bugger in there.  What's your experience been , if you don't mind me asking.

Ummm... it's not a pleasant experience. Reminds me of masturbating into a sandwich bag both in feel and sound... nasty.

According to the advice I was given when I purchased my female condoms, if you insert it early enough it softens enough so it doesn't sound like a "sandwich" bag and shouldn't feel like one either. However, I have yet to try it out so I'm going on the advice of an expert rather than personal experience.

Just my thoughts......

psssssst! Can I inform you that if you do get reviews I'll be surprised?  They are intent on gving you a lesson in the makes and models of contraceptives which as you've said before you have all the information on.

Can't help you though...I'm using the 100% full proof method at the moment and you've already used the 99% effective kind I used in the past.  Good luck on those reviews.

Aileen68 -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/16/2007 2:36:36 AM)

If you're looking for a method for birth control rather than disease control then you may want to look into natural family planning...taking your basal body temp to chart your ovulation.  If done correctly and with condoms at fertile times, can be very effective.  You have to be extremely consisitent with it though.  I used that method for about five years successfully to prevent pregnancy and then I used it in order to get pregnant.

Simple solution: menopause.

*sigh*

FR~

I have the IUD.....of course my husband the military man still refers to it as my IED.....anyway

As for saftey with fisting..for the most part yes, it is fine. There are two little strings hanging down out of the openeing to the uterus, and you have to be very careful not to really pull on those in any direction. For the first few months of my having the thing inserted, Sir was terrified of even touching the strings for fear of knocking the thing loose. Was miserable, he wouldnt put his fingers anywhere near the inside of my vagina...finally I drug him down to my obgyn who inserted the thing and told her to please tell him it was ok...and she talked with him and bit and even showed him how the thing worked and that he didnt need to worry as long as he didnt physically grab the strings and pull. The problem with fisting comes when you ball your fist up, its possible to wrap the strings up in between your fingers, and depending on what types of actions you do once the fist is up there, twisting or anything, if the string is caught in between fingers it could pull.....

Anyway, to the OP....Im sure you realize that the male condom is really the only method thats gonna give you almost foolproof assurance against getting pregnant. They make other things, but even the sponges and creams and gels are really supposed to be used in conjunction with a condom, not really on their own. I know lots of chicks do with ok successes...but it only takes one time....and unlike with a condom when its pretty obvious if it breaks and you can go grab plan b (I get sick from it too)...you never know when the gels failed you until its too late.

As a mother of 4 boys...(2 of which were born on birthcontrol, one on the pill and one on the shot)...I dont hold much stock in very many methods.....And as my sex ed teacher in highschool once asked the class....what do you call couples who use the "timing" method?.....Parents.

everyone prefers what they prefer.....  I used the diaphragm.  I loved it. lots of fun "foreplay" with him inserting it too.

ultimately it comes down to you and what your body can handle.

remember, its a foreign body into your body and your body may not like the foriegn body you choose....choose wisely and have an option.
the only reason i chose diaphragm..... i put it in, i took it out and left no foriegn body inside of me

The biggest problem I've experienced with it, is remembering to remove it and insert it on time (they make a timer for this, comes with your first freebie from the dr), getting ahold of the thing to get it out, and the expense, as it wasn't covered by my insurance.

I did have a problem once with it and tampon removal, but I just put it right back and was more careful.  All in all, it's a fabulous product.  Given the opportunity, I think I'd like to try the new IUD thing, though.

You don't feel it in there, most of the time I forget it's there. I love the ring. It's only slipped out during sex and then it's slipped out three or four times in one year. My patch used to fall off more than that and at least with the ring I don't have to get a new patch. You just slip it back in.

golddragonlady -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/16/2007 7:23:11 AM)

birth control - any hormone replacement is going to be 100% effective, but only if you remember to take it.  In the UK maket, other than the pill or mini pill the GP (general practitioner - family doctor)s recommend:
InterUterine System - mixture of a coil (IUD) and a slow-release hormone, so it lasts for 5 years
rods - slow release hormone, lasts for 6 years or so
sterilisation of course!
I think your options in the US are different from ours possibly?  but may be worth you looking up on the internet if you want to be free from worry and then discussing with your doctor if you think it's right for you.
Condoms are always the best way to prevent any infections of course - but they're not statistically 100% fool proof, only about 97%.

I'd never ever ever use the rythm method and I'm regular as clockwork with my periods and can tell you the day I ovulate becasue I feel cold.

I've used teh pill, the mini pill - then husband had a vasectomy.  Now am single again, I use condoms.  But will get an IUS fitted when I meet someone to settle down with again untill I am too old to get pregnant, then will have my tubes tied.
(BTW - poster has 2 kids, both meticulously planned!!)

re: Female condom (as opposed to the FemDom) - my experience of hefty bagginess was even with the warming and relaxing period... it just felt kinda not right.

I do have exposure-based latex reactions (if I'm going through a lot of 'em, I get irritated), so I've been known to use the polypropylene- and nitrile based condoms if disease proofing isn't an issue. They also have the advantage of being de-sensitizing agents and containers for ... additives.

Do not question why I put the ben-wah balls in the reservoir tip... just trust the pervert... ;)

Sorry it's not a female take on it, but I'm a very strong believer in condom use... especially since there's more that can be done than *just* wrap a willie in it...

LdyScarletDomina -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/16/2007 9:04:02 AM)

OP:  I absolutely LOVE the today's sponge.  You just dampen it with a bit of warm water and insert.  No leaking at all, it works for a full 24 hours!!!! Neither my Master or my submissive was able to feel it and my submissive never complained about taste issues - don't even think he knew I used it.  (sorry if that seemed gross, thought it might be useful info)  Never had removal problems myself.

Once you do get into the Gyne, I believe you mentioned you can't do the pill.  A few years ago I was IN LOVE with the Ortho-Evra patch - its once a week to change it and it works great - I didn't have any side effects; no nausea, weight gain or anything.  I'm really very interested in the nuva-ring and once I'm done breeding (5 months to go) I'm actually 99.9% sure I'm going to try it - so thanks feastie for the feedback on that one!!!!

Drifa -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/16/2007 9:48:53 AM)

IUD's don't work well in women that have never had children because the space available is smaller. The main risks of an IUD are perforation of the uterus, abnormal bleeding, and heavy cramping. And you can expect that it will be fairly uncomfortable during placement at your doctor's office. That "you may feel a little bit of pressure" crap doesn't really explain that any time you dilate the cervix it feels like childbirth. I've never had an IUD, but for other procedures with similar dilation I've found the procedures not unbearable but decidedly unpleasant, even with my Lady there holding my hand.

Contraceptive sponges do work well and are over-the-counter. They typically are about the size of a plushy makeup pad and are impregnanted with a spermicide. You fold 'em and insert them, then use a finger to make sure it's snugged against your cervix. They are comfortable enough that you won't notice it once it's in. Of course, with the spermicide, oral sex is not going to be fun... but you could solve that with a dental dam. The sponges are kind of a cross between barrier method and spermicide. The barrier is not as complete as a condom or diaphragm provide. Family planning clinics may carry samples you can try.

People also forget that diaphragms are an option.  Put a little spermicide inside, fold, insert and snap over the cervix and you are done. You can put it in long before you actually need it, you don't feel it once it's in.  In my personal opinion, oral sex in this situation isn't bad... usually you don't get as much of the spermacide in the vagina as with a sponge or insertable etc.  These must be fitted by your doctor or family planning clinic.

The problem with all of these is that while they protect against pregnancy, they don't do anything to stop disease transmission. Condoms are much better for that, and I'd personally always choose a condom over the risk of getting one of those evil "gifts that keeps on giving" (herpes, AIDS, other STDs). And if your partner gripes about the condom, make it more fun by learning to blow it on.

There are other options available these days. My sister had a Norplant implant before she had her tubes tied. This is a hormonal option and carries the same risks as do birth control pills and other hormonal methods.  Several of my friends are now using the NuvaRing, which is a hormone-impregnanted ring that goes into the vagina and around the cervix much like the ring of a diaphragm, you put it in and leave it three weeks, remove for a week, pop the next one in after that.

Amazing the things you learn when you have a parent who is an OB/GYN.

soultoshare -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/16/2007 6:00:02 PM)

For years, I used a diaphragm, I'd put gel inside the diaphragm, worked EVERY time but the one time I didn't use it.  I have diabetes, so the pill isn't an option for me.

I'm lazy, and haven't gotten a new diaphragm, but found something similar at walgreens called Instead....it's actually used in place of a tampon for your period, but I had the surgery to stop mine.....but it's the same principle....put gel or cream, the films or the bullet inside it, insert it and forget......it holds the goop inside.  The only thing that I have come across is that it tends to be felt sometimes, by both parties.

PP should be able to fit you for a diaphragm.  Actually, as far as bc methods go, I loved mine.....you could insert it long before you have sex, your choice of spermicide stays in it....the gel worked the best....so it doesn't kill too much spontaniety.  The best part is no side effects, unless you're allergic to latex or certain kinds of spermicide.  A properly fitted diaphragm won't be felt at all, and won't inerfere with anything but fisting.  And I've never had it pop out either, that seems to be some urban legend.

Hope this helps.

Norplant can be a good method of birth control, but like many forms of BC it can cause weight gain, headaches, etc. I used the original Norplant many years ago. Implanting it didn't leave a scar, but the removal left a scar of about 1 inch. My advice for anyone considering Norplant is this: Do not believe a doctor who tells you can't get pregnant for a year after removal. It took me less than three months.

came4U -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/17/2007 6:58:15 AM)

Try the greyhound method and pull out on time.

no wait, no no, I had 4 kids that way. LOL.

now waiting for someone 'spongeworthy', sigh.

yeah, try the sponge, make it part of foreplay and let him put it in. woohoo.

I got pregnant on NuvaRing [&o].

soilsubbie -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/17/2007 8:16:20 AM)

I have the IUD too.  hurt like a bitch to put in, was a bloody mess after and bled off and on for 3 months.  I still have horrible cramps, but no bleeding. U have to be on a period to get it. They wil sound your uterus first to make sure it will stay in.  that hurt like hell too.  but i do love it.
