The Real Liberal: John Edwards is Third in the Polls, But Don't Count Him Out
--From Issue 1033

If he weren't rich, handsome and so well married, you might feel a little sorry for John Edwards. Never before in the 231-year history of our republic have the inalienable traits that Edwards possesses -- his fair skin and a Y chromosome -- been anything but a prerequisite for presidential politics. Today, his race and gender stand a chance of derailing his campaign altogether. "There's a lot of democrats who would like to make history," says Markos Moulitsas, founder of the influential online forum Daily Kos. "The party is anxious to nominate a black or a woman," agrees Dick Morris, the former adviser to Bill Clinton. "You have to sign off on either of those two options before you even get to voting for Edwards." Indeed, Edwards has been all but eclipsed by the celebrity candidacies of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama: He ranks a distant third in national polls, and his $12 million cash on hand is barely a third of Hillary's and Obama's hauls.

It is somewhat of an interesting dichotomy.  A party which has stood endlessly for equal rights for people of color, gender, religion, whatever, which may have problems electing a wealthy, self-made white man with nice hair.

Im voting for him, although I still think the October surprise will be Al Gore.

Endlessly? You seem to forget that it was the Democratic Party that were the rabid racists trying to repeal much of the gains made at the end of the Civil War.

True.  They share a name with the Democrats from post Civil War America.  The name of the other party escapes me at the moment; I blame pain killers.

However, the party that was once the "Democrat-Republican" after the civil war eventually morphed into the Republican party of today.  While a new third party moved into second place known as the Democrats with a more liberal and populist agenda.

I apologize for the use of the term endlessly.  Probably goes back to my studies of post WW2 US and civil rights in the 1960s.  Going back to the early 1960s when compared to geological time is historically inaccurate.

Lovely use of the term rabid racists, but I am not going to bite.

"Real Liberal?"
Not "Real Democrat?"
The Democrats these days care more about 12 million illegal aliens then they do about the 150 million "working people" in this country that's why they'll lose again.

That was the southern democrat, who has little to do w/ democrats today, other than in name.

And when they kicked all the racists out,and started doing the right thing, douche bags like Strom Thurman left the Democratic party, and joined the Republican party.

This was the very time that the republican party became the party for America`s bigots. This is when they started fighting civil rights and the Voting Rights Act,affirmative action and welfare.

He left the klan and renounced it,then fought for civil rights.

Your point?

I`m pretty sure David Duke is still in the republican party.

Can you name a bigot that votes democrat?

What a wonderful sweeping generalization. The Republican Party, the party for bigots. So therefore, if it's a party for bigots, then a member must therefore be a bigot.

I highly doubt that everyone that fought for civil rights, everyone that believes in welfare, etc. etc. etc., is a card carrying democrat. Just like I don't believe that every card carrying Republican is automatically a bigot. If I did, I would have an incredibly, INCREDIBLY, narrow mind. Screw individuals, I'm just going to label everyone! It's easier!

Funny, how some "liberals" are just as hilariously close minded as the conservatives they love to hate.

Edwards doesn't stand a chance for one reason.... Hillary. The Dems have been banking and investing everything in her since she was first lady. Come hell to high water....she will be the Dems nominee.

But she's not as popular as many think. Her unfavorability rating is the highest of any current presidential candidate in either party. And only a little over 40% of Democrats support her as of right now.

I think you misread the implications of Owner59's comment.  The claim, that the Republican party became the party for America's bigots isn't the same as saying that all Republicans are bigots.  It's a big tent, and that would be a stupid claim to make.

If you think that the Republican party hasn't had continued success in attracting white racist voters, though, I think you'd be wrong.  The history of immigration and welfare politics has often been a thin veneer over racist sentiment towards minorities.

Yes, and it's a stupid claim that some do indeed make.

It's also true that bigots found/find a place in the Republican party.
