a medical study...
quote:

People with red hair are more sensitive to pain and consequently need more anaesthetic during operations than other patients, according to new research.

"Red hair is the first visible human trait, or phenotype, that is linked to anaesthetic requirement," says anaesthesiologist Edwin Liem, who conducted the research at the Outcomes Research Institute of the University of Louisville, US.

so, have any dom/mes found this to be true?

I'm a redhead and I hate pain (receiving it, the sadist in me can dish it out) but I've had to deal with certain types of pain all my life -- female problems you might want to think of them as -- thus I've become a bit numb to some types of pain.

Nice to know that next time the dentist tells me it's in my head, not my nerves that woke up in the middle of drilling, I can tell him to look that up. :)
I've always required more, from Novacaine to knock out..they don't like it when you wake up in the middle of what they are fixing..lol. There are alot of redheads in my family, and we all trade our wake up horror stories.
As for subs, the few redheads I've had, have seemed to have lower pain tolerance levels than the dark haired ones. Blonds seem to be in between. Just my observations.

well I suppose it's all individual, I personally don't see how hair color affects ones pain level.......all I know is 7 strikes of a brand made me want more, so must be an exception to this rule.

hmmmm....I used to be a redhead, now its more dark blonde with a bit of red tones in it....(naturally changed I mean, not dye)

I have a pretty darn high pain tolerance when it comes to S&M type play. Ive scared people.

But I do have a really high resistance to anestesia (spelling?) and pain killers

That's interesting. I have read this before -

I though it meant that redheads were harder to knock out?!  As in high pain tolerance?

Wait - electric shock? I think maybe the study is flawed. They need to do more studies using other stimuli.

Volunteers?

Untrue.

My morsel is a natural redhead and can absorb scary amounts of pain.

On the other hand, My precious has auburn hair... and the same skin traits as most natural redheads (fine, porcelain skin, lots of freckles, etc.) and can absorb scary amounts of pain as well.

Well, I'm no redhead, but I know what you mean Ghita.  I have a high tolerance for pain killers, anesthesia, alcohol, etc.  I don't know if this is because of how my body responds, or if it's a brain thing though.

I don't see how you can judge this. I am a redhead and I get migraines, so that is the worst pain imaginable. All the other "pain" I might receive, is fun pain and my level is based on arousal, not my hair color.

I am also a redhead and have a high tolerance for pain.  It also takes horse-amounts of anaesthesia to knock me out and morphine level painkillers to have any effect.  Neither bdsm pain or even normal pain like headaches, sprains or broken bones seem to hit me quite like it does my friends.

Every time I tell her a pop was not that much, she takes offense. This could be why, since she is auburn. Actually, I think I read years ago that redheads had more nerve endings in their skin. Anyone else remember that?

Yes true. Whilst administering CBT and electrics to subs with red hair, they tend to be more sensitive to pain.
Especially when using deep heat.
I remember one in particular, and he sat in a bath of cold water for half an hour after session, after I applied some deep heat, wax and nettles to his fleshy area lol

ExSteel mentioned a study from years ago in which it was found that redheads had more pain sensory nerves in the skin surface than other types.  I remember that study but couldn't find it.

I don't know whether or not I buy it...my first submissive was blonde and it did not take much to make her feel pain of any kind.  If she stubbed her toe in a pair of boots, she still felt it strongly and she did not take a lot of clamping, flogging, paddling, tight bondage, etc. before getting close to her safeword.

My second submissive was auburn and took a great deal of pain before entering into subspace and never seemed to take long to recover.

My third submissive was a true redhead and also took a lot of pain.  If you look at just these three, then the second and third submissive seem to belie the statement of redheads being more sensitive.

Having played casually with blondes, brunettes and redheads, I have never been able to pin down more sensitivity on one type than another; rather it was the individual themselves and the types of pain-infliction they enjoyed that seemed to make the difference.

I don't believe that there is a difinitive answer. There have been several studies that contradict each other.

As a redhead with fair skin and freckles I can tell you that in my own experience I have a freakishly high tolerance to most kinds of pain, with the exception of thermal pain. Extreme hot or cold I don't tolerate as well. I also have an extremely high tolerance to anesthesia, pain killing drugs and alcohol. However, I generally do not need pain killing drugs to deal with extreme pain. Also, numbing agents such as Novacaine and Lidocaine have no effect whatsoever on me.

Recently I have had two major surgeries. My condition was one that should have sent me to the hospital much, much sooner...but I was unable to realize the intensity or seriousness of the pain. I have also been injured on several occasions and delayed treatment because of my inability to perceive the intensity of the pain. My anesthesiologist told me that they do indeed take red hair into consideration when calculating dosage and that in my case I required extreme amounts of anesthesia to knock me out and had a hard time waking me up. In contrast however, following the surgeries my surgeon was literally begging me to take the painkillers, which I found little need for. It ended up that he removed the Dilaudid drip because I was not pushing the button and had the nurses give me regularly scheduled shots that I could not control.

I have dark auburn hair that changed naturally over the years from a medium brown. I do not have freckles...never did...I do not burn easily (although I try not to get as much sun as I did when I was a teen). My pain level tolerance varies according to my mood. If I am feeling unwell or in a bad mood, I am not nearly as tolerant as when I am in a good mood and feeling well.
