WASHINGTON (AFP) - Top White House political adviser Karl Rove, who masterminded President George W. Bush's political campaigns in 2000 and 2004, said in an interview published Monday that he will resign at the end of this month.

"I just think it's time," Rove told The Wall Street Journal. "There's always something that can keep you here, and as much as I'd like to be here, I've got to do this for the sake of my family."

The paper said Rove's resignation as White House Deputy Chief of Staff would become effective on August 31.

Rove has been under fire since 2003, when retired US diplomat Joseph Wilson claimed he had illegally leaked to the media the identity of Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, a covert CIA employee.

Wilson asserted the leak had been orchestrated in retaliation for his New York Times article, in which he refuted the Bush administration's claim that the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein had explored ways of purchasing uranium ore from Niger.

The claim, made by Bush in his 2003 State of the Union address, was widely used to justify the subsequent invasion of Iraq.

An investigation into the Plame leak led to perjury and obstruction of justice charges, and subsequent conviction of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former chief of staff for Vice President Richard Cheney.

But prosecutors determined last year there was no reason to charge Rove with any wrongdoing.

Asked in the interview if he felt he had committed any mistakes during his White House tenure, Rove said, "I'll put my feet up in September and think about that."

Good riddance. I think he was a darn hard worker (I read once he almost always worked 12-16 hour days). Unfortunatley, I think as time went on, I grew in my impression that his pro-Bush image and stategy campaigns were knee-deep in sleazy tactics. I think this move might just turn out to be good for Bush (not that anything can actually save his image at this point, but still).

The conman folds up his table.

One by one they now slink off into the sunset. The more they stay in the public's eye the more the public will scrutinize their wealth stealing dealings. So having fleeced the taxpayers it is now time to depart.

That about sums it up.  Every one of these slimey S.O.B.'s apart from Scooter Libby is gonna get off scott free.

Solaise -> RE: Karl Rove to resign (8/13/2007 5:33:34 AM)

....And my guess is that he isn't going to 'slink' very far. Just far enough to get out from under the public eye. He still has his fingers in the pot.

He *could* be the "Fall Guy". Pin it all on him, and have him do a fade-out like Ken Lay, stick a dead bum in the coffin, and "Steve Wellington" takes a no-show consulting gig with some lobbying firm.

Not to worry, like Ollie North and G.Gordon Liddy,"Scooter will probably get a show on Fox News.

Rove will still be advising bush, but symbolically(anyway),this is good news.

Wonder which GOP candidate he is going to start working for? Romney seems the obvious choice.

LotusSong -> RE: Karl Rove to resign (8/13/2007 12:32:39 PM)

All the resignations to "spend more time with the family" makes me wonder.. what (else) do they know that they aren't telling us?

That's most definitely what's happening. He's a kingmaker, and he's probably now focusing on the next "king" he's going to put into power. There's not much politically he can do for Bush, so it's a pretty obvious choice of what he needed to do. His leaving actually serves as a benefit to Bush (so neocons can say that "liberals" are now focusing on a guy that's no longer around).

Nosathro -> RE: Karl Rove to resign (8/13/2007 5:22:47 PM)

I read the article my understanding is that once he leaves the White House he will work for Bush still in trying to spin history to make Bush look good.

ELUSIVE1 -> RE: Karl Rove to resign (8/13/2007 5:52:18 PM)

some of you may appreciate the humor in this...I left for work at 6 this morning--working with a new account, new people..so my daughter hears PART of the news report and texts me "Bush is resigning, will be out by Sept 1"...well I was ecstatic...asked the new employees (only half joking) if they would rather cut out today celebrate with drinks at the local pool hall....yeah, they all think the blonde mgr is totally insane..I will check accuracy of text messages from now on...

Alumbrado -> RE: Karl Rove to resign (8/13/2007 5:59:16 PM)

Interesting to contemplate in light of history, whether this moment will be seen as the beginning of the end for a gang of corrupt politicians, or just another spin of the wheel.

one could only hope that it is the beginning of the end, and that text was actually a Freudian slip...

The problem with being proven to be a liar, Owner59, is that nobody believes a word that comes out of your mouth after being found it.

When I see proof that he is not a deceitful, machiavellian scumbag, I might grant a bit of credence to the noise emanating from his pie hole.

As it is, I know when his lips are moving he is lying.

1. He`ll be working for the next GOP presidential candidate.
2. He`ll write a book, cash out on his treachery.
3. He`ll open a consulting firm,with someone else`s`s name on the shingle.
4. He`ll spend more time w/ his family.
5. He`ll advise, via telecommuting w/ bush from Texas.
