LA, what about it?  The Cartier "Love" collection goes back to 1969.  Cartier percieved that the "hippie" movement was petering out, and those "kids" were growing up, acquiring wealth, and would buy jewelry if it was modern, and had a twist.  Cartier hired Aldo Cipullo, a young Italian designer, who joined Cartier in New York, and he was inspired in 1969 to create a two-piece bracelet that had to be bolted together to encircle the wrist.

The "line" of jewelry was at first only this bangle/bracelet in solid gold that required a tiny screw and custom screwdriver (also solid gold) to fasten.  Supposedly, you couldn't put the bracelet on by yourself and therefore couples were encouraged to "lock their love up" in a "permanent" bond (actually, to take the bracelet off all you had to do was get someone with a jewler's flat head screw driver to remove the screw...or cut it, as it is very soft gold.  And romance aside, Cartier sold it to anyone with the dough and the desire to own it.  Anectdotally, many women would ask the jewler to put it on for them.)

The line was reintroduced in 2006 with a number of "Love" pieces, including rings, bangles, and chokers.  They are quite pricey, as gold jewelry goes, but they are distinctive Cartier.  You can often find pieces from the '70s in estate jewelry sales.

Cartier certainly never marketed it as kinky then.  I don't know if they do, now.

I had difficulty with the link. I always love Cartier. Those little blue boxes from Tiffany & Co. always puts a smile on my face as well.

They used to have a bracelet with a padlock for him and matching necklace with a key for her.

It does say the line was introduced in the 70's.  It doesn't say anything kinky, although some quotes from the "cuffs" line and necklace line include:

"...a world where all dreams are permitted, excess, power...."

and

"......forgetting yourself until you are no longer two, but one; possessing or letting yourself be possessed"

They don't list prices.  You have to request that.  I found some of the pieces quite appealing.

i actually think the bracelet is perfect for those of us who must go about our lives in conservative settings, whilst also being something that is permanently in place. it's been around for some time, but that just shows that it's stood the test of time and come out still going strong.

it's a lovely daily reminder, very visible and yet quite accepted in all settings. : )

I saw an advertisement for this collection in this month's Glamour magazine - and I hadn't known it had been originally created in the 1970's - so when I saw the magazine ad, I immediately thought that Cartier was engaging in "niche" marketing to the BDSM world (I really did. After all, there are a lot of us out there).

Although, now that I think about it - "cuff and lock" type of themes in jewelry are not (and never have been ) restricted only to the BDSM world (although they seem completely appropriate there, and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't partly the intent on the part of Cartier to market ot BDSMers).

Anyway - I think it's nice it's kind of an understated look (at least in my mind). It's not over-the-top. Maybe even a little too austere (for me) yet I still think it's attractive, overall.

I'd certainly be okay with it, if a Dominant or a submissive gave me one of the necklaces (it's attractive enough to me, and would be something I'd consider to be symbolic, and after all, it's gold, isn't it?).

It would be interesting (to me) to find out how well this line sells.

I think... that was a nice thing to see after just waking up  . Saw a 'few' things that I 'need'.

Yes, the site definitely could use more substance and less flash (literally).  But I'm just so surprised I haven't heard of it all, specially with it starting in the 70s.  You'd think kinky people would have totally thrown this all over the place by now.

I agree which is why I prefer TIAS for vintage stuff or design my own with a vintage style in mind. Not sure about Cartier but I know Tiffany & Co will help design something for you custom.

I've seen it before and they are gorgeous, but most of them include diamonds which I decided a few years ago I will never purchase.  I don't think there is any way to guarantee that diamonds are conflict free, and the only way to end the diamond mining practices in Africa is to simply stop buying the products.

I didn't realize they still sold them. Haven't seen anyone wear one for 30 odd years.

Yes, I do realize I'm dating myself.

If you are seeking to buy African diamonds ... I would agree.

However, the Canadian Diamond minds in the Northwestern Territories are a bit different in my opinion.

The plain gold bracelet goes for about $8000.  The new collection, with diamonds, other precious stones, and enamel on gold, go for $20-35K.  Maybe kinky people are poor?  Or have better sense?

As for Canadian diamonds, they are great if you are cutting steel.  If you want wearable investment-grade gemstone quality, unfortunately, you are looking at conflict diamonds or DeBeers.  I don't believe in the diamond hype, but the fundamental quality of African stones is generally so superior as to make it pretty much a closed issue.
