This is a very sobering reminder that everyone should have their business in order before something should happen to either party. Any time people live 'outside' of society's altogether hopelessly narrow definition of what constitutes a family, stories like this are going to happen. My heart goes out to both of these gentlemen.

Status: offline 		I have reached the limits of my tolerance toward people who are intolerant of homosexuals. If anyone is going to Hell, here, it is this guy's intolerant, ignorant family members.

*That probably sounds intolerant of me - but I've had it with people who act like this. I think they are narrow-minded idiots, whether homosexuality is "against their religion", or not. It's insane to treat other people this way, IMO. How "Christian" can they really be?

Status: offline 		I am a nurse in Cardiac Intensive Care and unfortunately see this alot. We have to do what legally the next of kin wants, which varies from state to state. I have let partners come in after families have gone. It is sad but it is what happens in out society. I personally feel that person is important and should be apart of their care but that isn't what the law says in my state. Sad but true.

Status: offline 		It is critically important for people to have a will or living trust, as well as power of attorney for both medical and financial.  Had the dying party listed his partner as his decision maker/agent/power of attorney, and required that he be present, I'm thinking this would not have happened.  Next of kin or not, the dying party gets to call the shots by legally preparing beforehand.

Status: offline 		Unfortunately Health care Power of Attorneys and Living Wills aren't a guaranteed. Any family member can get a lawyer and go to court and revoke it. Until our federal govt makes a law to guarantee these things they can be overturned. I have been witness to many family arguments and this does happen. Don't hold your breath for the gov't to look out for the sick.

Status: offline 		Not only did this man's family stop his partner from seeing him, but they also took his money and his house. And the kicker for me was that this 'devoutly' religious woman stated that she would rather her son died than got better and went back to his life with his partner of over 25 years. What an evil, disgusting woman.

It is like when someone wins the lottery, all of a sudden 3rd cousin fukwad remembers you from the family picnik back in '79 and is your bestest buddy.

Status: offline 		I think it's common for people (especially young people) to forgo addressing these kinds of questions. Who wants to think about their own mortality? But bridges collapse, cars run off roads, aneurysms pop. This is exactly why same sex unions need to be given legal protection. Without it, bigoted realtives will continue to take advantage of the un-protected status of the surviving partner. Power of Attorney and Living Wills do afford 'some' protection (and I believe more in some states than in others).

But since the courts have finally granted visitation rights to this man's partner, I can only hope that he recovers enough to be able to state in an open court what he wants. Indiana Courts sound very sympathetic to this man's plight, but without those golden documents, their hands are tied.

That was well said at that site. People do not know how to put things in perspective.

What I mean is that they are allowed to disagree and disapprove of the lifestyle, that is their opinion and they are entitled to it. But their actions were fucking nasty.

So they sit high on their horse and proclaim that their love for a God they do not know, and who may not even exist, is greater than that which they hold for their son.

I have my opinion on homosexuality, I am not for it, but that is me. These assholes are making decisions for someone else, they simply do not realize something that I do. That is each person's decision. They shun and agonize, just wait. I hope they got a lot of shit (likely) and a huge fan. If this guy dies I would be willing to provide the fan, I got a dandy ¾ horsepower exhaust fan, I mean you can't light a match within 20 feet of this thing. It should be well able to give them the coverage they deserve.

Not for their opinions, but for their actions.
