seeksfemslave -> Fats Waller (8/12/2007 3:04:21 PM)

Was Fats Waller one of if not the greatest light entertainer that has ever lived ?

Those who dont know who he is or more accurately was dont know what they missed.

Tonite, Sunday I  was sitting having my usual pint of beer or two feeling well just flat really, and a Fats record came on. Immediately my spirits were lifted and big smile came on to my face.
How many entertainers can do that ?

Seeks......i loved the story of Fats being kidnapped and forced to play at a party for three days, as the suprise guest of one Mister A Capone.

Yeah, that's some good music.
I remember seeing Fats Waller in "old" movies when I was a kid.
Nice site that U-Tube, I was watching some videos from one of my favorite groups "Altan" in there too.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Fats Waller (8/12/2007 8:30:48 PM)

My mom used to play fats at night to get us to sleep. To this day I love listening to Fats and destressing the day away with a glass of wine or good beer.

MsOG: thanks for that link to Fats on YouTube. Shame about the quality and the emphasis on the "dancin" tho'
Its Fats' delicate accurate dynamic  and just " bloodie happy" piano playing that does it for me. A real "one of a kind". He could take the stupidest songs. shake 'em up speed 'em up and give everybody, well me anyway, a good laugh !

Watching Fats led me off to Errol Garner who I hadn't heard for ages.
So thanks again.

You are welcome, Seeks, and there is a bunch of Fats on YouTube.  It's all so old the quality isn't so good.

And YES to Erroll Garner.  I had the Concert By the Sea CD before my CD collection was stolen.  Truly a delight.  Who wouldn't like Play Misty For Me??

I love that music.

Emperor1956 -> RE: Fats Waller (8/12/2007 10:58:40 PM)

FR:  Nice to see folks that appreciate great music.  Draw the line from Fats to Errol Garner (and of course, Art Tatum) right down to Marcus Roberts...there is something wonderful in that traditional touch.

E.

(I put in a link to Marcus' website if you haven't ever heard him!)

seeksfemslave -> RE: Fats Waller (8/12/2007 11:18:24 PM)

MsOG: that link has opened up new pathways to me. I just didnt realise there was so much music on YouTube.Django Reinhardt, Stephan Grappelli
Errol Garner  laborious intros that man,
Art Tatum tho' he could get carried away lol.

Its just gone 7am here, I'm going to have my porridge and then my next search is for Bix Beiderbecke.

Cya happy music fans

ownedgirlie -> RE: Fats Waller (8/12/2007 11:28:43 PM)

Enjoy the music, Seeks!!  You'll become a YouTube addict like the rest of us [8D]

I had some fun looking up Pinetop Smith, king of Boogie Woogie.  I grew up to my Dad playing that stuff.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Fats Waller (8/12/2007 11:57:23 PM)

Albert Ammons, Meade Luxe Lewis, lots whose names escape me
Basic Boogie ie the old 20s/30s/ style of piano playing is OK....in short doses lol
They certainly gaves those ivories a pounding lol. No wonder they were often miles out of tune ! The pianos I mean.

I feel really elated to be able to link quickly to a sector of music that I like very much but dont hear very often.
ie light swingy two step if you will music played to....entertain.

I can play the pianner a bit and I tried to accompany Fats on Aint Misbehavin. I know that quite well. He was playing in E flat but the bloodie record came out shifted into E, half tone up. Bit more difficult that. Confused me that did.

popeye1250 -> RE: Fats Waller (8/12/2007 11:59:06 PM)

Seeks, try some Nat "King" Cole, some Louis Armstrong or,..........some Jimmy Durante!

seeksfemslave -> RE: Fats Waller (8/13/2007 12:07:34 AM)

Jimmy Durante; bloodie 'ell.  he could play a bit as well. How about his <the night I found the lost chord>  then he went and lost it again  I bet I havent heard that in 20 years.
Lets celebrate 'cos I'm feeling great cos I've found swingy music on YouTube.

Nat king Cole: another fine swing pianist. His vocal record of Unforgettable, which I probably havent heard for thirty years is superb. IMO. Last time I heard it was when they did an electronic  mix with his daughter .
Well I've heard agin now !

Adding: There's no end to this. Durante's Lost chord is on YouTube !!! I'd forgotten that he actually found the chord again, so all turned out well in the end.

There must be more of us lost souls who like such things than I realised lol

Just came across Willie the Lion Smith playing Rosetta (Earl Hines toon lol ) in a lovely medium tempo stride style.
I'd give my left arm to be able to play like that. No that might cause a problem it would have to be my left foot.

popeye1250 -> RE: Fats Waller (8/13/2007 5:38:04 PM)

Seeks, check out Dave Brubeck and his 1961 version of "Take Five."
Great stuff!

seeksfemslave -> RE: Fats Waller (8/13/2007 6:09:15 PM)

Its now 2 am and I'm still at it , watching Utube I mean, and I've been to a pub to listen to a band called the Tierra Buena that ought to play only New Orleans but in fact plays lots of different stuff. Always on the swingy side tho'.

What I have been watching takes me back thru' all of the jazz music that I have liked over my WHOLE life .

One thing that has surprised me is how attractive was  Billie Holliday. I've only seen pics.of her when she was a bit of a wreck.
Nostalgia is what it used to be after all. lol
Thanks again MsOG.

Petronius -> RE: Fats Waller (8/13/2007 6:27:41 PM)

LOL One of the songs my Dad used to sing out from behind the keys (way off key, mind you, but that was part of the charm) - "I can't use no woman, if she can't help me rob and steal.....I wake up early in the mornin'....can't even eat a decent meal..."  (A boogie woogie tune).

Gonna have to check Seeks' eyes soon - me thinks they're buggin' out.
