Stephann -> National Guard (8/10/2007 1:25:20 PM)

For all and sundry, I'm enlisting in the Texas National Guard.  I'm a former Marine, have been out of service for about 8 years now.

Probably doing my training in Augusta Georgia, my MOS will probably be Network Switching (nothing's set in stone yet though.)  Any thoughts, advice, etc would be cool.

To answer a question posed elsewhere, no I won't lose any rank going in.  Being a former Marine, I won't even be able to attend the Army basic training; saves Uncle Sam some money, but it means I'll show up for my first day of AIT with a handful of new, unpressed uniforms, boots that haven't been properly stripped and polished, and still trying to remember one bizarre Sergeant rank from another.

LCpl Budge

PS ghita,

Nope, only did 3 years in Okinawa and my last in Washington DC.  Beyond that, I've only been to Canada, Mexico, and the obvious 3 years in Santiago, Chile

GhitaAmati -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 1:29:23 PM)

Just call everyone sergeant...thats what I do (ok...well not everyone, I hope you understood that as everyone who actually IS a sergeant of some sorts).

And the new boots they've been using dont have to be polished.

ghita~

PS: then you missed out on some interesting prostitutes

PPS: I almost forgot, buy stock in velcro

Stephann -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 1:46:23 PM)

Yanno,

I've never actually been with a prostitute.  Or rather, as a client.  I've dated strippers and prostitutes in my day (well, part time prostitutes.)  And I just now got the connection between Thailand and the thread in question....duh.

How...how does a military man survive in boots that you don't polish?  I... I don't get it.

When do you leave?  The ranks are all different depending on the service you are in anyway.
Isn't there some sort of refresher course?

Aileen68 -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 1:50:58 PM)

Congrats and thank you.

GhitaAmati -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 1:55:04 PM)

well..you gotta brush them up a little bit...but there's no high gloss spit shining going on anymore, they find other silly things to waste your time on now.

No more ironing either. And when you have to wash your uniforms, you just rip the velro rank and patches off your ACUs (no more BDUs) and toss them in the washer. Class As and Bs have preshined shoes...I think they're actually patent leather, so they dont have to be shined either.

Stephann -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 1:55:41 PM)

sub4hire,

the rank names are different, but the military uses standardized pay grades; I came out of the Marines an E-3, and will go into the Army as an E-3.  Both my time in grade, and time in service (major factors for promotion) are kept.  I'll likely be promoted to 'Specialist' (Army grade E-4) within months of enlistment.

Aileen,

That's actually the reason I was nervous about this thread.  I'm not looking for any pats on the back, but figured it might be interesting for others who are curious about the military to hear a little about it.  Thank you though. :)

Stephan

Aileen68 -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 2:05:24 PM)

My bother in law has been Air Guard for over twenty years so I know the committment that's required.  I appreciate anyone that makes that committment.

Tarisa -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 2:12:06 PM)

Stephann, that is very nobel of you.  I have the highest respect for people in our military

EvilCrimeLord -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 2:43:53 PM)

but but but who will replace you in ER? Oh Dr Carter left already nevermind. Good luck Stephann and always tread carefully wherever you go.

Kalista07 -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 5:15:58 PM)

Okay, well since this is my first post on these boards since my new profile, i must start if off right.... [:(]
Stephann, i frankly think Your decision sucks!!! It sucks big time!!!  In fact, it sucks so big that i may have to be a communist and move to another country....

Okay, seriously, as i've told You before i support whatever decision will make You happy but i'm going to miss the hell out of You......

hmmmm...anyone have any antidote for Stephann withdrawal???  [:D][:)]

mnottertail -> RE: National Guard (8/10/2007 5:35:42 PM)

you will become a specialist then, not a hard core mos the only stripe corporals are in 11b mos's (thats infantry).

When your guard  unit gets called up, you can toss the commo wire, you will be  beholden for your K-rations by walking with guns.

It is yes, drill instructor---not drill sergeant.  you will have them in AIT.  same ol, same ol, dont loan money, sleep with your hand on your ass and pecker, if you don't smoke you aint gonna have to worry (no smoking lamps in the army, but they restrict it some for the newbies, as a SP4 you will probably have charge of barracks, unless you get lucky and get an old motor pool ssg in there or a sp5 or 6 cook.   You can't be as tough as marines with everyone.... and it will be more like permanant duty right off the bat.  You can pull a  6 year on them  (depending) but what did you sign for?  How far from a bachelors are you?  Cause I gotta tell you I did a try it  and went to the OCS school and told them to shove it.  If you can go guard OCS--------and push for it--------fuckin' do it you are young enough.

Sgt Melby (US Army RA----did the duty)

a specialist 4  an  eagle on the outline of a chevron and rockers  upside down is  a half step lower than two stripes all the way up, E grades are exactly the same with the difference of specialists which is not command (technical) and they are a half step lower than stripes.  Warrants and officers are the same.

sheesh, Kalista, relax; I'm not going to fall off the planet ;)

Ron,

yeah, that's what the recruiter told me.  Actually, he also mentioned that us prior service fellas will probably be kept a little separate from the new recruits, so that our 'bad habits' don't influence them (chuckles.)  Thanks for the heads up on the ranks.  I don't smoke, and honestly there's a good reason I'm not going back into Uncle Sam's Misguided Children again, even as a reservist.

Should I be called up, I'm not too worried.  I always told ma I wanted to see the world.  I usually shot Expert in the Marines, to boot.  I just don't have an itch to see blood if it's not my slaves.

And yeah... I'm a long, long way from that BA.  Something else I'm hoping for a lil help with.

Should be interesting, to say the least.

Stephan

yeah- had to make some sort of smart ass comment to start my day off right....no offense meant - the one beautiful thing about this country, about the only one, is that we have freedom of speech- sorta anyhow[&:]

The irony of that little viscious circle is that we have the ability to free speech because of our military.  In fact, all of our freedoms are a result of our military defending our rights.

mnottertail -> RE: National Guard (8/11/2007 7:11:15 AM)

well I did a little recruiting too, see they ain't changing the pitch much.  gonna be a cakewalk compared to the suck. you can get into reserve/guard OCS without the ba, but  to advance you need it. the pay is alot better. I would talk hard to the recruiter to see if you can go for it, I mean really hard.

Satyr6406 -> RE: National Guard (8/11/2007 7:11:32 AM)

When did "Brown Hats" in the Army become drill instructors instead of drill sergeants? I earned those stripes and I'll have the "sergeant", please?

Also, to the best of my knowledge, there's no more specialist rating above 4.

Peace and comfort,

Michael
