i think it depends (as others have said).
i was "just a ....". i was because that is how he viewed me. It was pretty much beat into my head that i was 'just a' and that i never would be 'more than'. Well, after about 5 years (yes, in the dictionary under the definition of stupid is a picture of me), i found out that he was (and had been for 4 of the 5 years) living with his g/f who was to become his finance' (no, i did not know about her). In my case, yes i was lower than a g/f, wife and pretty much anything that walked above the dirt.
