Status: offline 		My eight year old wants some sort of a video game system for his upcoming birthday.....I don't really know anything about available options anymore....I had a really great atari when I was younger but havent played anything in years.  So, my questions are...any reviews of which systems are better than others, best for the amount of money, and most game options for young children....no point in buying the system if all the available games are severely violent cause Im not going to buy them.

Buy a used computer, 150 or 200 bucks.  Drop in a nifty graphics card (around 30-50 bucks.)  Buy two USB controllers, 12.95.

With this set up, you can play just about every Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis game ever made.

Not to mention the added internet, printer, books, and computer games that are computer exclusive.

Consoles are a waste of money I think.

Status: offline 		Yes, saddle the 8 year old with some nerd-rigged compromise... none of his friends will even notice that it isn't really an XBox....

And look for the non-violent games with words like 'Auto' and 'Grand' in the title.

Seriously, are you buying it for the 8 year old? Then they are going to want the latest coolest thing, and if you don't get them the run-n-gun games, their friends will certainly be happy to share.

Or are you buying it for yourself? Because the comparison shopping ' best value' approach is an adult thing. 

Kids want Spiderman, pizza, and Spiderman pizza while playing 'Spiderman Nukes the Giant Pizza' on their Wii or Xbox

Status: offline 		Computer with an emulator is a pretty good idea.  For current consoles, I'm not too up to date, but I think the Wii would have the most child centric games (Nintendo generally does).

Status: offline 		I'd probably go with a WII too, if it has to be a kid friendly console.

Don't expect it to be even remotely as cheap as an atari.  Expect the end investment to top 700$ in the first year.

I have an 8  year old and a 6 year old.  We started with playstation2 a couple of years ago but house was robbed and they took the frigging playstation!!

So then their Dad got them a game cube and the world was good.

A year later their Dad got them a Wii (for my house)and the world was great! 

Don't know how much money you are looking to spend, but I love the Wii.  .
Wii Sports is usually included with a new console and honestly, he won't want or need another game for a very long time. There are several games on there that have them off their asses and using their bodies. It's got boxing (they really get an aerobic workout), bowling, baseball, tennis..etc..  It's the only console they have had  that  I enjoy playing too.
Stephann is right though.. It's a big chunk of money.  The console, with remote control, accessories, and Wii Sports is about $450.  (give or take a few $$)

At their Dad's they have a Playstation 2 (which he bought used actually) and their newest obsessions are  Dance Dance Revolution (the one where you copy the dance steps you see on the screen, kind of like the game "Simon") and they sweat their little asses off; and Guitar Hero (sort of same concept but with a Guitar ).  If you want to PM me, I can give you the names of tons of appropriate games for it..

Another option is the Nintendo DS lite, a pocket sized player which you can get used at Gamestop for under $100.  The games range from $15 to $39..

I totally agree with Alumbrado.. Don't cook them a green pepper hamburger for their birthday and tell them it's McDonalds when he really wants McDonalds..(anyone remember Eddie Murphy Raw?)
It's his birthday!

Like I said, you are welcome to PM me for lots more info (i'll prob just give you my number to make it easier) or I totally recommend going into GameStop..  The employees there know their shit!

Status: offline 		I'm all for the Wii.  I wish we'd had that when my kids were young.  Rather than sitting for hours on end with their eyes glazed over and drool dripping off their dimples exercising only their thumbs, they can be up using their entire body!

Status: offline 		Wii is the best system (it's not just a kiddy system by the way), it's $250 and you get a really cool game wiht it. It is real hard to find though. A DS would probably be the way to go, there is lots of good games for it and it plays gameboy games too. I think it is like $130 (doesnt come wiht a game though). message me if u have any more ?s

Status: offline 		I'm going to be boring and say the Wii too. We got one a few weeks back and its just great.

On the violent games front - you do realise you wont be able to keep them away? Aint gonna happen! But I would advise checking them out before he gets them; my 12 year old had the first two of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series - lots of shooting, car chases and so on, but nothing too bad; kind of on a par with what one sees on TV. Then he got the one where the main character is a black guy - I can honestly say I was speechless at it - really vicious violence accompanied by extremely bad language and attitude - which of course my son started emulating within days. Strangely, that game seems to have gone "missing".

Status: offline 		Friends have a Wii.  We all like it.  You can make your little Wii person look just like you...very funny at times.  I've discovered that I suck just as bad in Wii bowling as I do in real life.  The beer frames sneak up on ya sooo fast.

Status: offline 		We do not have a Wii however we are going to purchase one at some point because they rock and it isn't all sit down and veg mode.
 
We have all the other systems and I would definately recommend 360 as well.  Guitar hero rocks if he is into that sort of thing and the new version to be released will have other instruments so again, not simply a sitdown game.  Plus you have HALO which rocks.  I am not anti violent when it comes to games and believe it is good to teach children how to react to it and explain the ideas behind such games than blinker them from understanding - to me thats the equivilent of 'non competative' sportsdays.  Obviously there are more 'obscene' games available, but you just have to deal with the childs level of understanding and like DVDs there are guidence ratings now. If you get the 360 and have a live account, you can download all the fun and funky games from the past now also like Defender, PacMan, etc... I personally wouldn't recommend a PC for games at all unless your child is a big adventure gamer.

I do not disagree that every kid should have a computer early, and that things like JumpStart are doing the child a huge favor, nor that a PC would function as both a GTA machine, and more. 
 
But pushbutton entertainment is what the game consoles promise, and as a birthday wish fulfillment, I'd focus on that.
 
(Unless of course, you are hooking the PC up to a 60 inch plasma screen and surround sound)

Status: offline 		I'd recommend a Nintendo Wii, primarily because Nintendo is geared for younger players and you'll get the more of the games you'd like your child to play.  If you think you might be interested in gaming or could use another DVD player, I'd recommend an Xbox 360.  You won't get as many kid-friendly games, but there are still good ones out there (Lego Star Wars, for example) and you get a good console altogether with it.

Just to clarify, he actually does already own his own computer, I gave him my old one a few years ago when we bought a new one (after actually wiping the entire hard drive and starting over! Didnt want the little bugger finding the porn collection!) He's had the JumpStart games, along with blues clues and curious george and things like that since he was about 3. Kid's great with computers. A few years ago we bought him one of those plug n play sega game controllers for about $15, one controller with about 6 games in it that plugs directly into the TV, no game cartriges or anything to swap out. It has sonic and some racing game, and something with a dolphin and a few other rather tame games. Even after 2 years of hard use, it still attracts every kid in the neighborhood (13yr olds down to 5 yr olds)because its the closest thing to a video game any of them have ever gotten to play.

I do like the idea of the Wii, I will have to check into that, but Im not sure his dad was planning on spending that much money. If there was any possible way I would just upgrade his old computer and buy him more games for that, but its gotten to the point it crashes anytime you turn it on, and it wont play anything but really cheesy low graphic games. After doing some research, it would cost less to buy a new computer than to overhaul the old one.

Status: offline 		For my part, a computer for my child doesn't mean mindless entertainment for for him.  It means something that we can spend doing together.  I know kids do need activities they can enjoy 'alone' but I know I was certainly a child raised in a home where we were thrown a nintendo and told to keep quiet so our parents could do 'more important things.'  This is fine occasionally, but this was the rule not the exception in my case.  Lessons I intend to make use of, in my future.

Frankly, I'm an opponant of any sort of 'pushbutton' entertainment.  But it's all opinion here.

Status: offline 		yep 8 year old has to be a wii....as a grown up prefer playstation..but i like to kill things and slump on the sofa as i do...but the wii gets them up and moving and is very kid friendly games wise...
