Alright, so I decided to take Organic Chemistry II over the summer. And, like normal, I've decided to thumb through the pages before the final exam. And then it hits me. This isn't like Math or Physics- there's more than a couple of general things to memorize. So. Anyone know a good summary of Organic Chemistry? Not that I'm not looking forward to reading a couple hundred pages of chemical equations tonight or anything. Karana damn memorization-based courses. This is why I never liked Spanish.

Are you familiar with the benzene ring? You better. How about polysacharides? Isomers? Esters? Polymers? How do you synthesize aspirin or nylon in the lab? Hopefully this is strictly O chem and doesn't dabble into biochem or you will need to know all that fun cell metabolism stuff, ADP -> ATP and the like. I'm so glad my chemistry days are behind me.

Yeah. There seems to be a good bit added to it since then. Synthesizing Asprin's Chem 102 now. =/ I'll be good. Just a lot of memorization I wish I didn't have to do.

You're just now starting to memorize stuff? Oy oy oy. Sounds like one of my bizarre school-related nightmares, although those dreams are usually centered around a math class I haven't bothered with all semester, have no idea ~where~ the class is, and have to get to class because it's final exam time.

No help for you from me. Chemistry was my all time favorite class in high school and college...BUT that was 20 years ago. I've moved on and am going back to school for the first time since I got my degree. It's going to be an interesting semester to say the least.

I'm going to throw out a different suggestion (and this is from someone who got a Ph.D. in chemistry -although not organic- close to 20 years ago and did a little teaching.)- don't read page after page of reactions- it won't do a damn bit of good. Wouldn't bother with notes much either. You need to sit down and work the synthesis problems- start with a compound and figure out how to synthesize it. Don't bother to read the stuff much- just enough to get a sense of where to look something up when you get stuck. Yes, the volume of reactions can seem daunting, but when you start working enough of the problems, you'll begin to see the "bigger" picture. Science courses should never be about rote memorization. It's finally over. You had good advice, by the way. Looking back at it, the synthesis practice was the best.

Hah, yeah. I can't count how many final exams I've walked in on, looked at the nearest person I could vaguely recognize, and asked, "So... what was this class about?"

I still get that dream, and I already graduated from college! Usually, it centers around me having forgotten I registered for the class. It actually takes me a few minutes after I wake up to realize that I'm fine since I'm not in college anymore.

I dont know much about Organic Chemistry but I have read how complicated those carbon based molecules can be. The existence of life as we know it could not have occurred until such molecules "evolved". Almost as tho' something was set in motion to cause them to come into existence dontcha think.? I have no advice to offer but good luck anyway.. .

CL; I gotta tellya sumthin. Memorization is for waiters and valet parking attendants. You can learn the trig tables and be able to do nothing with them, but like me, you could know what the shit means and be able to apply it from tables without help I don't really know how to put this. Dude I know went to college for about eight years. He took nutrition, genetics, and later medicine. He wound up working at a slaughterhouse. Of course he is a suit, but the thing is, he was probably thinking some research center, John's Hopkins, some big drug company, or something like that. I have no idea what they want from him, but they headhunted him, and he has been there for a few months and has bought a car. It is not what you know, it is what you do with it. Being a professional student is fine, for X amount of years. Eventually you need real experience, in real business. In that light, what might be those target companies ? T
