The US government now has greater authority to eavesdrop without warrants on American citizens' telephone calls and e-mails after President Bush signed new surveillance legislation into law on Sunday. Authored largely by the White House, the new law, officials say, provides a legal framework for warrantless monitoring that was already being conducted by the National Security Agency outside of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Many Democrats and civil rights activists argue that this new law erodes fundamental American liberties and privacy rights (yet the leadership brought it right to the floor and not a single one attempted a filibuster----my comment /not part of the story). Supporters contend that it's vital to fend off potential terrorist attacks.......

The new law expands the eavesdropping powers Bush claimed he had the right to exercise with his Terrorist Surveillance Program in two major ways, reports The Boston Globe.

First, the law requires telecommunications companies to make their facilities available for government wiretaps, and it grants them immunity from lawsuits for complying. Under the old program, such companies participated only voluntarily – and some were sued for allegedly violating their customers' privacy.

Second, Bush has said his original surveillance program was restricted to calls and e-mails involving a suspected terrorist, but the new law has no such limit. Instead, it allows executive-branch agencies to conduct oversight-free surveillance of all international calls and e-mails, including those with Americans on the line, with the sole requirement that the intelligence-gathering is "directed at a person reasonably believed to be located outside the United States." There is no requirement that either caller be a suspected terrorist, spy, or criminal.

Maybe Pelosi and Reid do care more about the Country than I thought, or maybe it is just naked Politics....

But consider what it means. IF Pelosi and/or Reid had thought the American people were against or neutral on this issue it would never have gotten a vote. But they brought it right to the floor.

These very isues have been debated ad nasuem on these boards. I await the tortured explanations with anticipation.

Of course... The Anthrax Mailbombing Terrrorist, who killed after 9/11 the editor of the paper smearing the Bush Sluts is still on the loose, and Bushco *has* been spying on the members of the Senate and House and their families since *before* 9/11, so it's not really surprising that they'd like their families secrets to remain private, and at the extreme, to continue living.

The abuse of power, the obscenity of war, and the rape of the Constitutition were ongoing long before this administration, and they will continue long after, no matter which party is profitting from promoting them.

Let's analyze that:

1. Anthrax Mailbombing Terrorist, who after 9/11 killed the editor of he newspaper ( Nat'l Enquirer ) smearing the Bush Sluts is still on the loose.

2. Bushco has been spying on ALL OF US since before 9/11. Good thing AT&T got that immunity for complying with Unconstitutional searches, though... Of COURSE these Nixon Juniors are spying on the opposition, and their own people too.

3. Doesn't everyone want their secrets to remain secret, and their family healthy and safe?

I don't believe I *EVER* said that Bush was using these assets to exert pressure, but now that you mention it, it DOES fit together well.

Fagle, you are starting to sound like some of these conspiracy loons that lurk around the net with their black helecopter theories...

The real issue here is that choice does not exist in America with only the two political parties. Both are bought and paid for by the same people, and we all fall victim to a puppet show they put on every 4 years when election day rolls around to make us think we are changing the govement.

Our government is not going to change until the voters wake up and realize that elections mean more than party loyalty. This idea that Democrats and Republicans put out there that if you vote 3rd party or independant you are wasting your vote. How do you waste your vote by voting for the candidate you feel is best for the country? How is that a wasted vote? You want to be a pawn of the two parties and play in their little fabricated race....go ahead. But then dont go around all pissed off because the party you voted for broke a promise you fell hook, line, and sinker for.

Owner you should ask farg, he knows who the guy is, and that the same guy also killed the editor of the natinal enquirer. I have no idea why the guy wasn't caught, it can be hard to catch an individual, if you don't know who they are.

But owner59, you have no comment at all on the Pelosi and Reids brining this legislation to a vote.

And consider the implications that so many Democrats voted with Bush on it......
