This is a very ancient Celtic symbol (found in both ancient and modern Celtic art) that represents the 3 Celtic realms of material existance: earth, water and sky (or air). It also represents the sun, afterlife and reincarnation.

greetings Alexander48,

thank you for this information.

dream well,
dovie

You are quite welcome dovie! It was a pleasure to participate in this particular thread as it always amazes me how few people realise that this is a very ancient symbol indeed and has had many different meanings in many early cultures dating back well over two thousand years!

And a note to FatDomDaddy: Yes, a similar symbol was used on the rings in Histoire d'O (published in English as Story of O), but it certainly does not originate there!  For those who are interested, there is an illustration of one of the Roissy triskelion rings described in the book at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Story_of_O

Thank you for bringing up this very interesting topic dovie!

Best Wishes,
             Alex

I found this site to be informative as to what the BDSM symbol is and isn’t and its origin.

and why it matters so much...
