I heard one of the most idiotic statements on TV this morning.  They were warning the consumer that there isn't really a way to ensure that Americans could be safe from tainted or unsafe products coming from China. 

Uh-how about a return to making our own stuff? I know all the arguments about higher prices etc, but isn't our health and that of our unmentionables worth that cost?

Not only our health, but it'd be nice to have the jobs back.

The first thing you would have to do, is make it worthwhile in terms of tax breaks or other enrichment to buy our own at the consumer level.

Been tried at the industry level, and of course they will suck it dry and give you the finger, we might have to set some barrier to raise taxes for multinationals as well.

I think tarriffing rather than assisting is easier to deal with in terms of world trade.

It is a fucked up thing.

Listen. I gotta say this. I personally am not suprised and shocked. As a craft artisan I had the warning bells out ten years ago with every festival producer, trying to get someone to notice what was happening with the imports. The cheapness in price and qualty. Its killed off most every American artisan. But no such luck with most faires and festivals.

Americans embraced this stuff and still do, wholeheartedly. What? Nobody noticed the jobs went elsewhere? EVERYBODY noticed the jobs went elsewhere. But everybody kept running off to wallmart the second the conversation was over.

I have become very hardhearted about it. So my reaction to peoples suprise is, Right sure. Shut the fuck up. Americans are the CAUSE. Now, whats the solution America? I personally left the conversation 12 months ago in complete disgust.

Not to mention many parts on every single car "assembled" in the US. There is very little of any complexity that is entirely made in the US. It will never be that way again.

As far as assembly jobs, we Americans priced ourselves right out of those jobs. And no one is going to go without their spiffy latest electronic gadgets to pretend to be supportive of "made in the US"

What about if its a well known brand, such as Timberland. Would you check the label to see where it was made ? The last Timberland top i brought was made in China.

This "global economy" crap just isn't working out too good is it?
The only people it benefits are in big business.

And, another thought......was the fabric, the thread, the buttons or zippers? The equipment that the workers used to create the item?

So far I am quite pleased with global economy. It gives me a reliable cost effective auto to drive. Dependable, inexpensive, electronic items. My paycheck goes alot futher this way.[:D]

Regardless of how or why they decided........ I am not complaining. It just makes sense. But then, I am a big picture kinda person.

You want to buy American ?

You can have paper clips, certain items of furniture, missiles and certain firearms. You can have a 25 year old TV, a 30 year old car and a 25 year old microwave.

You cannot have a newer car or TV, a modern phone, a computer, a DVD or VCR, cable box, bicycle or exercise machine, and in most cases even a simple wall clock.

And I agree that it is the consumer, but I am not rushing off to Walmart. The only thing I ever got at Walmart was an eye exam in their optometry department. It was quite thourough I would say, and it was perfomed by Americans as far as I can tell. I can't say that the corporate monster taking a cut of my $45 was good, but what r ya gonna do ?

There is industrial space all over this country due to outsoucing. Seems to be a glut on the market. Seems that if the educational system hadn't broken down, someone would've gotten some ideas by now. The opportunity is there. Of course you could always be bought out for yet another strip mall, but then you decide what to do.

The problem is that we, as a People, seem to have lost the entrepeneurial spirit. We are out of ideas. I think if we fix that first, nothing can stop us. But that is not an easy fix. Any ideas ?
