SirEbonyPhoenix -> Did our fascination with BDSM come from the media? (8/5/2007 11:49:23 AM)

I've recently pondered this query as far as the BDSM lifestyle goes: Did our fascination with BDSM come from the media? What I mean by this is, did we show an interest in this from some of the tv shows or movies we watched that contained a scene where someone was tied up and held prisoner by their captor? Or could it be something much deeper than this, such as the music we listen to or a strong desire to fulfill our sexual fantasies? Any thoughts on this?

Well, the Addams Family premiered during my formative years and I'm all over Goth and BDSM .. so, ya never know. [;)]

My interest in WIITWD stems from what's natural to who and what I am, not how I've been influenced by media of any sort.

nope.  I am who I am because of something inside.  I do know people who say "it all started when I saw XYZ movie" though.

ELUSIVE1 -> RE: Did our fascination with BDSM come from the media? (8/5/2007 12:05:30 PM)

nope--I was raised in a very disciplined environement...survived catholic school, etc...so naturally I want that same discipline in my adult life...as for the physical discipline...again no...nothing in the media sparked my interest, it was ingrained deep inside of me all along...

I think alot of people who naturally are interested in BDSM find things that draw us in deeper when we see certain scenes and read certain passages.

Whats the media got to do with something that interests you??

For me personally I love what BDSM entails because it turns me on..Simple!!

If the media says its bad for you  are you gonna stop something you enjoy? Are you hell!!!

I agree with Rover and D, it is what I am--well ok that first red riding crop pretty much solidified it.

I believe that my interests were always there, however media did help bring those interests to the fore.

Tremendously. My first exposure to BDSM/fetish images was when I was in 3rd or 4th grade or so. I was living in Japan at the time and basically, a Japanese man took his wife to the states and had her killed. He made it look like some American thug did it. . . cried all over the news etc. It was later found that he had her killed so that he could be with his mistress (in the BDSM sense.) So it was *sensational* news in Japan. To lure in more viewers, they had images of dominatrices and sub males, whips and chains, scenes of torture on the tele ALL DAY. I really didn't concern myself with the story and the outcome. . .I was fascinated by the lifestyle of "them there bad people" they were showing us vanilla folk. *I* wanted to be a part of that world (sans going around killing people of course!)

Hell yeah.  Watching saturday morning cartoons as a wee one used to do it for me.

Though nowadays, whenever I see or read anything about war, prison, or the police, it's a huge turn off.  Whenever  I see real abuse of power it's an instant turn off sexually, (but still fascinating nonetheless).

whenever I saw a dominatrix scene in a movie I would think that it was hot but would give no more thought to it.

As far as what brought me into the scene itself, a good friend took me to a fetish club one night, she beat the hell out of me and I enjoyed it. the rest is history...

No, mine did not. Mine came from a person who I was involved with early on.

Interesting question, i think the media impacts us in so many ways we are not even aware of.   i  became interested and involved in my late 30's but i think the underlying inclination was always there. i just chose to bury it, ignore it, and not generally think or indulge in it.  i do have a memory which is pertinent to this thread theme.  When i was about 6 i was taken to see a movie by my sister. i was fidgeting in my seat as it was hard for me to sit still in those seats.  It happened to be a scene on the screen of a woman, she was mexican i believe as she had her hair tied back with a flower in it and she was wearing the typical colorful frilly mexican dress. She was tied to a post and crying.  There was a matador there as well and they were in a bull ring.  She was being whipped by this matador. i do vaguely remember seeing shots of the bull, but have no recollection of him.  As this scene was progressing and i was fidgeting, all of a sudden i had my first orgasm, i remember it quite distinctly as it overwhelmed me.  My question would be - which caused which?  Was it inside of me even then and i responded to the scene, or did watching the scene as i happened to be fidgeting create this connection?  i will never know [:D]

denika -> RE: Did our fascination with BDSM come from the media? (8/6/2007 9:22:04 AM)

I was playing 'capture the spy' when I was under ten with my friends and all sorts of other fun games.  As I got older and realised  more about myself the media did help in presenting idea's and confirming that i wasn't the 'only one' out there thinking and feeling  these things.  The terrible movie Waxworks in the 80's   inspired more Marque De Sade fantasies than anything I had ever read before.

It isn't that it triggered my interests but more than my interests greatly affected what I wanted to watch and what I remember seeing from my childhood. There are lots of cartoons where up until a few years ago I thought were really set on "Amazon" islands and worlds when it turns out it was merely an episode or two of seasons of a show.
