Soldier found guilty of rape, murder
By RYAN LENZ, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 15 minutes ago

A military jury on Friday found a soldier guilty of rape and murder in the slayings of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and her family.

Jurors deliberated much of Friday evening before convicting Army Pfc. Jesse Spielman, 22, of conspiracy to commit rape, rape, housebreaking with intent to commit rape and four counts of felony murder.

I am not saying that this isn't a horrible thing but, as someone who wore the uniform, wouldn't it be nice if, occasionally, we'd hear some good news from over there?

I hope they fry this bastard, though. He's a disgrace to any professional soldier ANYWHERE.

I agree about the need for some "good news", Michael. I'll see if I can't dig some up over the weekend.

Oh, Level, that was by no means, directed at you. It was directed at the reporters (we all know how fair they are) that never seem to be able to tell both sides.

I remember becoming the black sheep of my family. It was the day I raised my hand and said: "I, Michael P. _ _ _ _ _ _ _, swear (or affirm) that I will ...". I, immediately became persona non grata (with my siblings; NOT my step-dad. That was the day he said his first complimentary word to me). I still don't get that.

There was an article in The Independent about 4 months ago (front cover, pages 1 and 2).

It had a paragraph from around 40 US soldiers occupying Iraq. According to their memoirs, your article above is standard fayre. They don't see the Iraqis as human, they're fodder for their nihilistic whims and desires.

Well, who *didn't* foresee this situation when Dumya & Co decided to use Elite Combat Troops and Reservists for Occupation duties?

What "Good" news could offset the death of 2.25 American Kids EVERY DAY over there, and the associated fallout from their presence?

Ugly business; war.

De-humanizing or demonizing the enemy is typical in warfare.  If you allow your troops to see the enemy in their gunsights as a husband, brother, father, sister, mother, son, daughter, neice, nephew, wife, child, or other emotional lable, then the trigger is harder to pull.

Make them God-less, of inferior political beliefs, of a corrupt social value, or otherwise different in a negative light and it becomes easier to shoot.

This business is not news in the history of warfare, it's just being reported by the embedded media within the armed forces, and a lot harder to just overlook given that the eyes of the world are watching.

As to other comments... war is the application of force, or threat of force, to exhert political will upon another entity.  Whereas terrorism is much the same, with more fear of action then real action.

Well, if you don't hang the animals after you convict them, how are the other troops supposed to learn DISCIPLINE?

Actions have consequences. Violate the Trust of The People too badly, and it's only right that The People use your hanging as an object lesson to the rest of the troops..

This piece of shit *though sentenced* to 110 years, has a MINIMUM of only 10.

Ten years for this piece of shit, who insults America just be breathing the good, clean air the rest of us breath.

Hanging's too good for him.

That's an interesting viewpoint, Thompson. I'd agree with you but, then we'd BOTH be wrong.
