quote:
ORIGINAL: NorthernGent They don't see the Iraqis as human, they're fodder for their nihilistic whims and desires. De-humanizing or demonizing the enemy is typical in warfare. If you allow your troops to see the enemy in their gunsights as a husband, brother, father, sister, mother, son, daughter, neice, nephew, wife, child, or other emotional lable, then the trigger is harder to pull. Make them God-less, of inferior political beliefs, of a corrupt social value, or otherwise different in a negative light and it becomes easier to shoot. This business is not news in the history of warfare, it's just being reported by the embedded media within the armed forces, and a lot harder to just overlook given that the eyes of the world are watching. As to other comments... war is the application of force, or threat of force, to exhert political will upon another entity. Whereas terrorism is much the same, with more fear of action then real action. Semper V. Feaenistar
