I think many of us are beginning to realize, that we are going to replace/rebuild many of our deteriorating and crumbling infrastructure.
The question IS, will the government PAY for it?  I see many dangerous roads and highways daily that need improvements.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately, after New Orleans, the situations in hospitals, and now the deteroriating infrastructures, increasing problems in the school system, etc.
America seems to be on the decline.

at 55 billion, couldn't we cut the war effort in Iraq short say---a week or two and pay for it that way?

No way, domestic spending is not a priority.
You saw that with the situation in New Orleans, that lesson was learned a few years ago.
Remember when Cuba and 3rd world countries offered us assistance after Hurricane Katrina?
I will never forget that one.
Maybe 3rd world countries can help us rebuild our crumbling infrastructures.

**I think the road and highway situation is worse than the bridges**

I just heard it will cost TRILLIONS to repair the nation's infrastructure....or about $5,300 for each man, woman and child.

Personally, I think it is money better spent than trying to settle a civil war in some other country!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  How much money, again, have we spent on just electricity in the middle east?

The United States Government in its majestic equality forbids the governments of the world the right to sovereignty and allows its citizens the right to sleep and to die under bridges to keep us from destruction by the evil empires that beset us.

(this should be a hint to the neo-cons that if we intend to dominate the world we should first see to our own house, because our unkempt infrastructure will not withstand our invasion) we will be fighting on too many fronts even within ourselves.

The irony is for those that believe in small governments, countries like the US and Britain, their citizens pay as much tax as those who live in countries with big government. The only difference is, the countries with big government have first class infrastructure that is well maintained and modern and because of that, less accidents.

Hmm. Countries with big governments also don't seem too eager to go on military jollies but that is another thread.

6 Billion for rebuilding New Orleans' Communities...

...interesting dichotomy. Industrialised nations need good infrastructure to work, which comes dangerously close to socialism. A good transport infrastructure is to industry what universal health care is to individuals.

Interesting, I never thought of it this way.
The nation's infrastructure need's a lot more than bridges, a lot of the roads are shot to hell also.
How many people are killed because of roads that need updating? {traffic lights, stop lights, new traffic patterns, lane problems, no guardrails, no proper warning signs of dangerous curves, slopes, sharp turns, etc?}

I was waiting for the right-wingers to explain how the free market is going to fix the nation's crumbling infrastructure.

I guess they don't have a solution for this one.

It is all part and parcel of the war on terrorism, Lam.

Ron

I don't know how many cases I could site of a man choosing freely between wealth, power, and doing the right thing I could cite-----------

it would take some serious fuckin' time to find that cite in any meaningful sense.

And I suppose communism/socialism is the answer?

I agree... Because the Soviet Union never had any bridges collapse, roads fall apart, or nuclear power plants melting down.

well, talk about gilding the lilly........rotting infrastructure seems to be a republican, democratic, arch-conservative, flaming-liberal issue, but rather than consider it in its proper light, and perhaps find solutions it may indeed be more helpful to find a way to blame this on terrorism or the gay left-wing that is the cancer on the country.

By God, the good news is that this didn't happen when the republicans controlled congress, so that should say something.

Thanks for playing, no thanks for your adumbrated and adversarial jingoes, because they don't really change anything.

(and before you jack a fuckin' Mod on me, look up adumbrated at dictionary.com, it is really a rather common word, and it don't mean dumb)

We are very glad that there is cooperation from the masters of the intelligencia, we will need your support.

Buh bye,
Ron

See... Maybe if the Minnesota State Legislature had used some of the $2.1 BILLION  budget surplus they had to work with on bridge repairs it might have been avoided. The legislative bodies state and local governments CHOOSE how to spend their tax. Just because they choose to spend it things other than repairing roads, bridges and replacing sewer lines doesn't mean they should now raise taxes on an already over burdened American tax payer. I wonder what the Legislature for the State of Minnesota spent the peop[les  money on instead of earmarking it to fix that bridge?

We're not talking about the bridge in Minnesota.  That bridge was rated safe.  (No one knows why.)  We're talking about the 70,000 OTHER bridges that have been rated deficient.

But at least all you ideologues seem to agree that the free market isn't going to come riding to the rescue on this one.  When cyberdude starts talking about the Soviet Union, it's a clear sign that he doesn't have any concrete suggestions.

Maybe we're making some progress!  OK, kids, so just how is THE GOVERNMENT going to start fixing these bridges?
