No, fatdom gets a waiver from a minnesotan because he is of the baltimore class......

well, maybe we shoudnta took the three hunnerd bucks from jessie, looked to the larger issues, rather than pig at the trough so easily.

But the issue may be more complex, but everyone has regional issues, didnt you have some guy or another offing people in the mall not so long ago?  How is that playin, sport?

STATE and LOCAL governments can start by living within their budgets and fixing them before spending money on other things.

Tell me... If your water heater breaks do you go out and by a plasma screen television?

Here's a novel idea.... how about cutting back on the size of State Government until the bridges can be fixed?

OH.... and BTW... Free Enterprise will do its share by providing the actual companies and vendors who do the actual work.

Do you really want to see these bridges get fixed? Pass laws that make infrastructure the number one budget priority, take off union mandates and minority set asides off the contracts and give bonuses and tax incentives to come in early and watch how fast contractors come running.

I have an even better idea: How about cutting back on invading other countries and managing their civil wars...until the bridges can be fixed?

LOLOLOL, you are talking big government then, look to our own house rather than export our wisdom to the world?

yeah... about that...

Local US State Governments haven't invaded anyone since 1863.

Fixing roads, bridges, water systems etc is the job of STATE and LOCAL governments.

Last year Minnesota had a 2.1 billion dollar surplus. Most of the States in the Unites States are working on surplus budgets.

New taxes are not the answer, better fiscal government is.

Niether the War on Terrorism nor the War in Iraq are causing the failure to repair BRIDGE ONE the United States.

First of all you must be able to pour piss out of a boot.
While you can slosh it around you must be capable of measuring it.  You mus also have at least the wisp of some fact behind your rather all encompassing and masterful suggestive bovine aortas to tutor unfortunates such as me.......is that 2.1 billion surplus for Minnesota or is that an average divided among the states?

Can you teach me the difference between federal interests and local interests?

I am curious, and while I give you the benefit of the doubt,  I have  certain OCD's that like a gradeschool teacher, demand that you show your work.

There's a bridge that's seen better days near my house. My friend crosses himself everytime we cross it lol

Lordandmaster -> RE: Over 70,000 bridges rated deficient in the U.S.A. (8/3/2007 8:53:18 PM)

You must not have read the article, which said that it will cost $188 billion to fix all the defective bridges in the U.S.  That's just bridges.  That doesn't count any of the other things that need to be updated.  Most people estimate the cost of updating America's infrastructure at the $1 trillion level.

States cannot handle that kind of expense without federal support.  Saying it's the states' problem is the same thing as saying that you don't know how the problem is going to be solved.

In Canada, our big government builds new bridges every time they melt.

Otherwise, we could never ride our seals to work fast enough.  Besides, when the bridges melt, the polar bears eat us.

Great country, eh?

No, it's like saying asking the painter to add a few more coats for better insulation in the winter.

Remember when Cuba and 3rd world countries offered us assistance after Hurricane Katrina?
I will never forget that one.

a well earned insult!

pull out of Iraq a year early and you have a budget surplus.

What is the big deal?

In Fiscal Year 2006, the U. S. Government spent $406 Billion of your money on interest payments* to the holders of the National Debt

Actually I don't want to laugh, especially after the tragedy that just happened.
But making the sign of the cross, might be a smart idea for many people that need to cross many of these
dilapated bridges.

Ya know...we're talking about some big numbers here.  Stephen Flynn, author and expert on infrastructure (http://www.cfr.org/bios/3301/stephen_e_flynn.html), said just now on CNN:  The $22MM the government is going to allocate to fixing our bridges is what we spend every HOUR in Iraq.

Just sayin...
