feralcat -> Just in...new computer virus warning!!!! (8/1/2007 5:21:16 PM)

FIRST REPORTED IN EARLY jUNE, 2007

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by

Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered by

McAfee. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk,

where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus

acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all

contacts on your list with the title: "A Card for You".

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so

that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+ del keys or the reset

button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently

destroying the hard disk. In just a few hours this virus caused panic

in New York , according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't

open any mails with subject: "A Virtual Card for You." As soon as you

get the mail, delete it !! Even if you know the sender !!!

Don't these geeks have anything better to do??? sheesh...can't even send a card out !

I received this message in email the other day. Since I use a Mac, no worries here, so I took this to its conclusion.

The link in the email took me to pretty much a blank page. A small download was taking place in the background and when it finished, OS X displayed a dialog making sure I wanted to keep the executable. I chose to keep it.

When I opened the .exe file in my text editor, I didn't get a whole lot out of it, of course. It was in binary. I guess there was some sort of payload in it, I just couldn't tell. And since most .exe files aren't executables on Macs, I couldn't run it to see what it did.

Just be careful... YMMV.

Anyone who opens an attachment without knowing the sender deserves it.

And if you do know the sender, and it seems funny, and you still open it, you still deserve it.

"Origins:   The
original "Virtual Card for You" hoax (now often circulated simply as a "A
Card for You") has been making the rounds in various languages since at
least 2000, with occasional changes along the way. No such (incurable)
virus existed, was identified by McAfee, was reported on by CNN, or
     "caused panic in New York."
However, September 2006 saw the release of W32Heartworm.A, an MSN Instant
Messaging network worm that lures IM users into clicking through to an
infecting web site with a message claiming to offer "a virtual card for
you." The original "Virtual Card for You" e-mail warning remains a hoax
(since the newer W32Heartworm.A version is spread through Instant
Messaging, not via e-mail), but IM users should be aware of it. "

Usually when I do this, there's a bit of ascii text within the .exe that identifies who created it. There wasn't even that. It was completely in binary.

I was hoping to see at least something humorous or snarky in it. I got nothing.

I wouldn't recommend a Windows user try what I tried. You're correct... they deserve what they get if they do.

I usually call these a spam virus. It causes bandwidth to be used by those that forward the information.
