sugarcoatedscamp -> RE: dear mr president.... (7/29/2007 6:18:45 PM)

This is one of my favorite current political statements; I think Pink hit the nail right on the head with the way I've been feeling, these last few years, especially.

i have loved that song for so long...

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: dear mr president.... (7/30/2007 2:24:17 AM)

she does have a way with words doesnt she?

Daddysjezzy -> RE: dear mr president.... (7/30/2007 2:55:25 AM)

Whether you agree with her or not its nice that she actually has an opinion and is prepared to put it out there.

sleazybutterfly -> RE: dear mr president.... (7/30/2007 2:59:26 AM)

I had this one on my myspace page for several weeks.  It's probably one of my favorites, and I don't normally do the protest song type of thing.  I suppose it's just because it's really more sincere than just attacking..though at times it does have a bit of that.

Anyway, I have enjoyed it since I first heard it.

"Dear Mr. President"
(feat. Indigo Girls)

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?

Probably feels bad, like most people.

Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?

The "rest of us" aren't all crying.

How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?

Meaning as her child goes to war? He dreams like all those other world leaders did, I'd guess.

How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

Cells??

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?

He doesn't hate gay people, this is far-left wackoness at it's worst.

I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

Some valid points, some horsepuckey.

No,? but he doesn't support them either if he follows fundemental christian doctrine which he does in his political statements - at least that is how I 'read' him... and I am not a left winger.  I think it is really easy to start bashing left or right wing parties - but the fact is he uses double standards and that is why that metaphor is relevant.

Horsepuckey maybe - but she is PINK after all - pop rock - it's hardly RageAgainsttheMachine - but it does raise awareness and questions, which can only be a good thing.  I know my son and daughter asked an awful lot of question when they heard this particular song and it is really great to have a political discussion on their level.

Peace

Perhaps, but none of us, including Pink, or the Indigo Girls, know that.

Sure, but not "crying" over Bush, certainly, which is what they're saying.

From a post of mine quite a while back:

"Q: What is your position on gay marriage?

BUSH: I’m not for gay marriage. I think marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. I appreciated the way the administration signed the Defense of Marriage Act. I presume the vice president supported it.

GORE: I agree with that, and I did support that law. But I think that we should find a way to allow some kind of civic unions. And I basically agree with Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman, and I think the three of us have one view and the governor has another view.

BUSH: I’m not sure what kind of view he’s ascribing to me. One day he says he agrees with me, then he says he doesn’t. I will be a tolerant person. I’ve been a tolerant person all my life. I just happen to believe strongly that marriage is between a man and a woman. I don’t really think it’s any of my concern how you conduct your sex life. That’s a private matter. I support equal rights but not special rights for people. "

"Bush is the first Republican president to appoint an openly
gay man (Israel Hernandez, assistant secretary at the Department of Commerce) to his administration[98]."

Oooo Mr Level... the boxes didn't look half bad!

Ms Pink doesn't and that's for sure and she knows it, but then that is why she is asking the question if she hypothetically took that walk - I know I would ask it too.

I interprete the tears in a completely different way - but lyrics are an artform like any poetry or painting - we all see things in a different way...

And I don't believe Bush is alone in letting down the people in cells up and down his country - but he sure isn't showing any signs of helping the situation - just as Blair didn't here.

Being 'tollerent' of a minority, race, country or whatever doesn't make anyone a 'good guy'.  The statement he made contradicts itself because he is supporting special rights by not supporting gay marriages.

And in general do agree - just see things in a different light - or '.dark.' - or on different 'Levels'[;)]

Nothing wrong with asking questions, certainly we should ask our leaders.

Yes! How do you see it?

To be blunt, I see that line in the song as misguided propaganda lol. It makes it sound like Bush is throwing everyone into jail, as opposed to teaching the kids anything through his No Child Left Behind policy. Now, policy can be critiqued, of course, but "cells"? Hmmph.

No, but it doesn't make them bad, either, certainly I'd prefer tolerance over the alternative. But I do support gay marriage, so Bush and I don't agree on that.

*comes back to the thread, soap still behind my ears*

Let me add this; if Gore were in the White House, would Pink being singing to him about his support of the Defense of Marriage Act? Somehow, I doubt it, it's selective outrage. That irks me. And just because Bush (or Gore, etc) don't support gay marriage, does not mean they hate, which is what Pink said.

Now, ya'll excuse me while I go squeeze out my loofah...... [:D]

RCdc -> RE: dear mr president.... (7/30/2007 6:33:43 AM)

Your ears have soap and mine are ringing coz my new hobs being installed!

The lyrics are (as you stated) 'What kind of father might hate his own daughter is she were gay' -
I don't see this as a statement that he personally 'hates' those of a gay orientation, but that by supporting something as he does, he is in effect giving credence to those people that do.  She is asking the question of him as she takes the 'walk' - it is a question of 'What can you do/are you doing to show this is wrong?'
He is in a position of authority where people can point and say - well see what he believes.  And being the king of double standards himself, he is hardly setting a good example or allowing people to have much faith in his decisions and his 'opinions'... which is basically how I read the song.  He may have gay workers on his staff, but he also nominates and supports people who have been openly wanting to 'cure' homosexuals - he hasn;t done a damn thing about the laws that allow sackings based on sexual orientation - Bush may not outwardly 'hate' - but his actions or rather - inaction - does not condone the legacy of hate that follows in his wake.  He talks about not wanting to give special rights - yet he does by his inaction.

The song isn't titled 'Dear Mr Bush' - it is 'Mr President' - were that moved to any other 'President' - it makes just as much sense.  And if it is aimed at him, it asks all the right questions.

quote:

Yes! How do you see it?

You asked - I give[:)]
Crying comes in many forms - in anger, in pain, in sadness.  But it isn't just all crying over bush, but life today.  You become a president to make a difference.  It isn't just something to do because your dad was one, but because you want to make a difference.  What difference has he made?  Where is the funding for the community?  How about the amount of deaths from poor healthcare?  Tax and cost of living is high.  People are dying because he sent them to fight a war that was minor in comparrison to other causes out there right now - not saying it was totally pointless, but minor.  This is his 'legacy' - of mixed messages and contradiction... where the poor become poorer and the rich have become richer and where those in between are now so caught up with debt and bad management of finances the gap between the poor and the not so poor has lessened - but not in the way they would want you to believe.

ach - the cooker man needs me! And I am not giving this the time it deserves....[8|]
Peace
the.dark.
