Well, the main reason is for med school. But after careful thought I have decided that I do not believe I will want to return. I feel I would rather start practicing medicine in England or Ireland. (It really depends on the school I am accepted to) So my question is not where I should move, it is how and what I should do to prep for my move, and how to inevitably stay there.

From what I have been able to gather, I must live in country for about six years. However, if I am on a student visa, it looks like you pretty much have to return to your country once done with school. One of the only ways I could figure was a work permit or visa. Is there a way I can earn citizenship while on student visa?

Cost of living? Differences that I should expect and will need to get used to?

This is just the beginning plans of something that is about 18 months out. Just looking for a heads up.

any particular reason you believe the "Ask a Mistress" forum on CM is the most reasonable place for your thread?  I would venture to guess you may be better off asking on a website dedicated to people who live or lived in the UK.....

Hmm I think you should look at where the best medical schools are and take it from there.  The cost of living is higher in London I think but then the cost of everything over here seems higher than america so I reakon you will findit like that most places.  I'm in the north and I love it here London is a bit too fast paced for me.  Sheffield and nottingham have good teaching hospitals apparently.  Good luck

Thank you for the links. I found some info on the price of flats inside London and some outside, and the price was quite significant. Went from about 900 pounds to 400 pounds. Don't think I want to live in London anyway lol.

After reading the forum guidlines there is nothing that says a topic cannot be "non-BDSM". As for a non-Mistress topic, I dont see that it is. I am sure there are Mistress' that have good and useful information on the subject.

You would have to apply for a student visa to go to med school here and technically you would have to declare an intention to return home at the end of your studies, but the good news is that there are special arrangements for qualified health professionals to remain to seek employment as these are generally shortage professions.

Imperial College and Kings College (both London) have two of the best Medical schools in the country, as does Oxford (although I think Aberdeen has the best, or at least, used to) It's not cheap to live in Oxford, as London. But it's entirely doable, depending on what student grant/loan/bursary you are elligible for.

I have no idea how you'd go about getting citizenship whilst a student, but maybe you need to live here for a while before you explore that route, anyway?

Oxford is quite a beautiful town and there's plenty to see and do both in and around the area. Very easy access to other interesting parts of the country too.

Things you should be aware of:
1. you're not going to be instantly welcomed everywhere you go, the English aren't renowned for their hospitality.
2. Transport isn't great, unless you have a car. Trains and buses are notoriously unreliable and ineffective unless you commute into/out of London.
3. Cost of living is high.
4. Exquisite architecture, amazing areas of outstanding natural beauty, excellent cultural places and, of course, fish and chips.

Yes. I remember walking around in Scotland with my camera, wanting to take a photo of every building I saw--even the shops ;-) Fish and chips were not as everpresent as I thought. Last time I visited London, I went around looking for a place that might serve fish and chips. We found several places for curry but fish and chips were hard to come by. Finally we found a place--it was a Chinese place that also had fish and chips on the menu ;-)

Certainly seems to be trend. You really have to go to a seaside town to get the best fish and chips. Oh, and if you're ever back here, I'd recommend haddock and chips rather than cod and chips [:)]

Ripples i live on the coast and most of our chip shops are Chinese owned, One has a van turn up from Hull and im in Sussex  :)

Red....If you do come over clothes are way cheaper in the States, at least in the South. I got some levis at a fifth of the price last time i was there. [;)]

Thanks for the tip! Whenever I visit a place, I like to have what is characteristic of the place.

Seeing your post makes me think it's importance to decide ahead of time which fish to order. If one is vacillating between cod and chips and haddock and chips, the words might come out as cock and chips! ;-)

Same for gasoline but I recommend not packing any in your bags ;-)

They have the best sweaters but, sigh, here in Austin they do the silverfish more good than they do for me.

Red, you are making a HUGE mistake.  The British health care system is sadly lacking, and therefore the ability to train physicians is concomitantly poor.  While I sympathize with your desire to leave the USA (Medicare and managed care cutting into that 250,000/year income, and all) and I'm sure it will be easier to get licensed out of the USA with that rape allegation, but I think you are seeking the wrong venue.

Might I suggest:

1.  University of Baghdad Medical School.   A superb facility, recently built with Saddam's money, and recently "deconstructed" by the joint forces.  Real world training in trauma surgery.  Real world conditions for the energy starved future, maintaining patients on 2 1/2 hours of electricity per day.  And you can ENLIST, and the USA will pay your transport cost.  Also, close to the trendy beaches in Israel.

2.  Tehran Medical School.  A fine school, although the lack of renovation or even cleaning since the days of the Shah have dampened the excitement.  No cadaver training here -- doctors (and just plain old sickos) get to do surgery on live hostages!   Similar to the Iraqui school, and some say an up-and-coming "hot spot" for young doctors...go ahead, make a plunge in Al Quiada futures and enroll today!

3.  McMurdo Basin School of the Health Sciences.   Hey, mate, you really can go "way down under" with the nursing staff here!   Experts in cryosurgical technique.  And...they speak ENGLISH.

4.  Idi Amin School of Medical and Mortuary Science.  You know, you can't go wrong with a school that makes its own cadavers....1000s of them!   Specializing in live crucifiction medicine, and "truth telling" using jumper cables and car batteries.  They say kids are DYING to get into this school, and they are right!

5.  Finally, who can forget the North Korean School of Medicine?   Surely not Kim Jon Il.  Specializing in hair transplant technique, forced feeding and the rape of stray nurses from neighboring countries, this fine institution graduates at least 3 "doctors" a decade!  And you can practice in lovely Pynongyong, where EVERYONE needs a doctor.

Oh, and red....Bon Voyage!
