The war in Iraq

Sunday, July 15, 2007

Perhaps Jack Murtha put it best: The Pennsylvania congressman, among the first to make the cogent argument that staying the course in Iraq was the exercise in futility that indeed the war has become, says President Bush is delusional.

Based on the president's recent performance, we could not agree more. "Staying the course" is not simply futile -- it is a prescription for American suicide.

We've urged for months to bring our troops home. Now is the time.

"Progress" has become such a nuanced, parsed and tortured term that it no longer has meaning.

The "fledgling" Iraqi government -- how long can it reasonably be called that? -- consistently has not stepped up to the plate.

President Bush warns that U.S. withdrawal would risk "mass killings on a horrific scale." What do we have today, sir?

And quite frankly, during last Thursday's news conference, when George Bush started blathering about "sometimes the decisions you make and the consequences don't enable you to be loved," we had to question his mental stability.

If the president won't do the right thing and end this war, the people must. The House has voted to withdraw combat troops from Iraq by April. The Senate must follow suit.

Our brave troops should take great pride that they rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein. And they should have no shame in leaving Iraq. For it will not be, in any way, an exercise in tail-tucking and running.

America has done its job.

It's time for the Iraqis to do theirs.

Fargle, and it's not just the Iraq thing.
Look at that "Amnesty" crap he tried to pull on the American People.
That alone is scuttling McCain's campaign.
Conservative Republicans are PISSED at that!
On the other hand Sens. Clinton and Abbadabba both voted for Bush's amnesty!  That's going to come back to haunt them bigtime!
Any chance they had with this Independant's vote vanished when they voted for Bush's amnesty!

I do not know why in a country of the size of the USA with as many wonderful folks as we have here I have never ever seen a candidate for president in either of the two major parties that I could appreciate.

I turned 21 (legal voting age then) about a week too late to be able to vote in 1968. I had no use for either candidate then, or in any election since then. However since I had already been drafted out of college into the army 6 months before, I was more upset at the time about not being allowed a choice.

I may vote for the one I dislike the least or against the one I oppose the most, but there is not one of them since then who got the dem or rep nomination that I'd invite over to my house to have a cup of coffee. I do always vote though.

What a deal...

It's an editorial in HIS PAPER.

So he micromanages everything?  Doesn't hire a staff of proffessional editors eh?

Lucky, I don't know how they do it at the Tribune-Review, but my sense (which could be wrong) is that the owner of a paper generally sets its editorial tone. So while Scaife probably didn't write the piece, my guess is that it's in line with his thinking. Or maybe he gives his editorialists quite a long leash.

If the editors are printing things of which the owner/publisher disapprove, they will shortly be replaced with someone who *does* represent the owner/publisher's beliefs.

According to About.com, the Tribune-Review endorsed Bush in 2004, for what that's worth. If I'm reading the About page correctly, they also endorsed him in 2000.

Found a George Washington University page that says the Tribune-Review endorsed Bush in 2000.

So this criticism comes not from lefty journalists but from a paper that supported Bush twice.

Jann S. Wenner started Rolling Stone in 1967 with the basic premise that people could write what they wanted to write and he would not edit.

The band Led Zeppelin boycotted the magazine for 30 years because of a piece written about them.  This was during a period when the band was one of the hottest bands on the planet.

Doesn't he own a whole bunch of papers and Media outlets?  Are they all saying the same thing?  Who knows maybe the editor who published it got a stern lecture?  or not?  I kind of think he hires proffesionals to run his papers and the editorial staff has discussions and come to decide what their banner Editorials will be.  I am sure there is a limit as to what they can advocate with out being replaced, I am sure heads would roll if a pro pedophilla piece ran, for example.  But I do think that making money is more the goal, and controversy sells.  Perhaps the staff is rolling with public opinion.  If Richard Scaife actually came out and said this, it would carry a lot of weight (It would be all over the TV news and weekly magazines would carry it all in full), but he hasn't.

But Bush isn't up for re-election...Now would be a good time for Republicans to triangulate and highlight thier differences.  The public is not happy about the war(47%want out now), but the likley voters are happier with it than the general public or the Democratic Party Activists.  And among those not approving of the war there are some significant differences, it's not a unifed, sewn up vote bloc.  Please feel free to disagree with me on this, no need to argue, we will see in Nov 08.

The election will turn on which party can get the most of its fringe voters to support a centrist.

I dont know what other media Jann Wenner owns or runs, but I suspect not much.

My only comment was about a previous poster who said somebody who wrote something the paper owner did not like would be out of a job, and I was posting something to the contrary.
