I saw that the final vote on cloture was 52-47 with a few Repubs voting for.  Makes me think at least a couple Dems voted against, but the news articles don't seem to include that information.  Anybody know what the exact breakdown was?  Who was the abstention?

But seriously,OW has a point.Politics is theater. With the grim subject at hand, this was serious, life and death theater. Those who say this was frivolous ,don`t take this catastrophe(Iraq) seriously.IMO

People didn`t see a lick of difference between the parties, until last night. The Dems forced the Republicans to expound on why this madness must continue w/ out end.The Dems know that there are disgruntled voters, republican voters, watching their Senators closely.
We picked up 3 more Senators last night,Snow of Maine,Chuck Hagel, and another Republican(can`t remember their name). That was 3 more then last time.

We also got the republican leadership to say publicly, that September was make it or break it month!A victory of sorts, because they`ll have to explain,in 6 sort weeks, why this invasion must continue, to very skeptical voters. So, the "never ending story" Bush got us into,is no longer never ending.

Until last night, most Americans thought the Dems let them down,b/c they funded the war, as Bush gloated. They thought that congress had failed them, thus the plummeting polls.America is very unhappy right now,and it showed.

Next time ,we`ll have more "cut and runners" joining us.That wasn`t the last all-nighter,there`ll be more. We`ll keep on ,keep`n on,till we have a veto proof majority. Then our men and women will be redeployed and withdrawn from combat. It remains to be seen how things settle out,but our current strategy in Iraq will change, and not just in name only.

It`s great strategy,b/c it forces the Republicans to defend themselves and their indefensible policies. To actually put a face on this madness, and sper people to think.
There`s no downside for the Dems, this is what 70-80% of Americans want. We`ll do this again, and again.

I know how Dems feel,as well as Bush supporters.Last night was for the middle ground and folks who don`t follow politics.

Peace

If I`m not mistaken, last nights vote was a vote to end debate, not a vote on the bill itself. If that`s true,it`s a defeat for Bush,b/c this process continues, w/ endless debate.Lieberman (I), voted w/ the republicans, to end debate.

Reed can restart this process at any time, and will.Next go-round,as we near Sept.,the Dems will pick up more Republicans, and more the next time.

Right.  The same 60 votes for cloture the Dems were been insisting was their right as the minority (dontcha just hate it when you have to play by the rules you set?).

My question was which Dem voted against, and who wasn't there?  I checked a few sources from the high-speed connection at work, but all I could find were lists of Republicans who voted for.  The Senate is split 51-49 I think, I'm curious how we got a 52-47 on this.  If three R's jumped and somebody abstained/wasn't there it seems like a couple pieces are missing.  Was it simply Joe Lieberman and the guy who had a stroke, or is there something interesting?

I doubt that being up all night brought those Rep's over. It was likely deals that were struck at any point beforehand. I do not care which party it is, stunts like this just make them seem to be working harder, when they could do the same job during the normal session hours.

And when it is all said and done, the bill would have to be signed.

It's a waste of time. The Dems would need 67 votes to override a veto. They only have 51. So they are way short of passing anything that would actually do anything.
Not even all Democrats are on board with this you know... And Joe Lieberman also voted with the GOP.

It's a political stunt is all it is. Because there was no way they were going to get those votes. But they needed to do something to make the anti-war voters happy.
