newsubinKC -> Spelling in profiles... (7/16/2007 1:29:25 PM)

Maybe it's because i'm a teacher, but i just can't trust S/someone who has more than a couple of spelling errors. As an adult most people can spell at about a 4th grade level, but i have found many profiles as well as emails contain MANY errors, and it really bothers me. Is it just me or is this a common thought?

I tend to ignore profiles with too many spelling errors... and try to avoid them myself.

What I can't stand is S/slash speak, that turns me off before a misspelled word.

I agree with the S/slash speak it is  annoying to read

Italics & colored fonts are very hard for me to read but poor spelling doesn't faze me.

I read the profile of a domme who stated she is perfect in every way, then she went on to misuse "dominate" and "dominant" so i pointed that out to her.  I did it politely and really was trying to be helpful. She sent me an angry email back then proceded to change her profile, so now she IS perfect.[:D]

givemyall -> RE: Spelling in profiles... (7/16/2007 3:03:58 PM)

It doesn't bother me too much, although I tend to find people that complain about it annoying, especially if their grammar and punctuation stinks [:D]

SageFemmexx -> RE: Spelling in profiles... (7/16/2007 3:05:58 PM)

Oh no, it drives me crazy too. A profile full of spelling errors indicates sloppiness and that's a big turnoff for me. Your profile is the first impression of how you represent yourself to the community.  If I care enough to proofread my profiles--then people contacting me should also care but apparently they don't.

It's like that first meeting and they show up with dirty fingernails and green teeth--I'm out of there!

There is something about reading poorly-phrased prose with abundant spelling mistakes that suggests a lack of intelligence. Some mistakes are worse than others, and more mistakes usually mean more red flags. We all make typos though, and I will also admit a tendency to misspell certain "problem words" over and over if I am not paying attention. The real issue is that this is a place where a pixilated page is the first impression that you make upon your audience. If the person has a sloppy profile with grammatical gremlins and abundant misspellings, (s)he is not only showing a lack of education, intelligence, and/or reading, but the person is also demonstrating complete ignorance and carelessness as well. If this is the level of commitment placed in making the formal introduction, then I shudder to discover how sloppy the person is in an informal setting.

Personally, I don't get why people don't use a spell check, especially when they are trying to make a good impression through their profile in a sea of profiles. I think of it as pure laziness and sloppiness. I also don't care for bad grammar, poor punctuation, or slash speak. I’m of course forgiving since I’m sure to have made a mistake or two in my day.  [;)]

Comic Book Case. For some STRANGE reason, it's ingrained in my style.

MistressofGold -> RE: Spelling in profiles... (7/16/2007 5:05:15 PM)

I think the fact that they don't bother helps me weed out the idiots.lol

My husband is one of the most intelligent folks I know, was a member of the honor society all during high school, has risen to management in his occupation, as well as having held several elected offices. All this despite having a learning disability which causes him to spell at about the level of a third grader, even though his verbal and writing skills are very advanced. Thanks to the spell check feature on his computer, and the fact that he often has me look over his papers for grammar or usage errors, he maintains a high standard in the paper work he turns in.

Any fairly educated person who takes the trouble can write a decent profile. If I see many errors, it leads me to several negative conclusions about the person. A well written profile does not automatically mean a good person behind it, but it leads to favorable impressions that will increase the chances of further contact.

There are quite a few free online spell checker sites, which allow you to copy and paste your text and check for errors. Here is one that I just used, and it took about 2 seconds, total.

I think some people are just terrible typers.
