Yanks take the Mickey out of Posh and Becks.
Could Americans already be suffering from overhype?

The arrival of the Beckhams in California has caused a sensation on both sides of the Atlantic - but it appears some Americans might already be suffering from the overkill.

The celebrity couple begin their new lives in Los Angeles as David is today officially unveiled as the LA Galaxy football team's new star player.

But the first signs of a blacklash against Brand Beckham are beginning to show. Yesterday they received their first public mocking when daytime TV hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa - America's answer to Richard and Judy - mimicked them live on air.

Considered talk show royalty across America, the couple are not known for their insults, preferring to embrace and encourage the celebrity culture.

But the pair had their surprised audience in stitches as Regis adopted a gormless-looking expression while Kelly struck a hands-on-hips pose and pouted right into the camera.

David, 32, should have no problems with his popularity but Victoria, 33, could find she has an uphill struggle on her hands trying to promote herself across the Atlantic as a fashion expert and talk show host.

Her reality TV show - Victoria Beckham: Coming To America - which follows Posh around LA, airs next Monday and she managed to rope in hubby to pose with her for a provocative shoot for W Magazine.

She told the magazine," I think people are really going to see me for the first time."

"I think they have this impression that I'm this miserable cow who doesn't smile. But I'm actually quite the opposite."

But Melanie Bromley of Us Weekly magazine was unconvinced, saying, "Victoria will have to get some personality, she's a slightly two-dimensional character for Americans."

Celebrity website TMZ.com also laid into Victoria, calling her "the doll-like diva" or "poshtitute spice".

It said, "[Victoria] Beckham's only real accomplishments appear to be looking constantly hungry and p***ed off and shtupping (having sex with) one of the sexiest men in the world."

You know, if it wasn't for that movie, I'd have no idea who that guy was.

I think the folks from the UK who post here are great......but I hate like hell that we've adopted your crapy-- fractional reserve-- banking system and your engrained mentality that has us groveling /bowing-down to Presidents, kings , queens, politicians, celebrities and pseudo-aristocrats.

We line up to shake their hands, toss roses at them and grovel at their feet -- when in all actuality we should pelt them with eggs and toss empty Jack Daniels bottles at them.

So he's famous for playing a sport that almost no one born in the U.S. is interested in, and she's famous for being in a pop band that hasn't charted in a decade, and we're STILL supposed to give a shit about them? Man, they're scraping the bottom of the "celebrity" barrel, aren't they?

i guess it's better than more Paris Hilton "news"

I think they're in for a huge surprise.

Beck isn't going to be getting much camera time except on the Spanish networks and I doubt Posh has any chance at all of replicating her TV show success here.

Although I think the US citizenry would be willing to give the UK a handsome sum to take them both back now instead of making us keep them for the 6 months or so they're going to be here.

No no, you can have them, keep them. We don't want anything in return.

Too skinny, both of them. If I gave them each a hug they might snap like dry driftwood under the crush of my arms.

Now, this issue goes both ways. We tend to think Americans are far more obedient than we are e.g. obedient to god, obedient to a system/government that is hell-bent on destruction, obedient to corporate power, and obedient to the army - I just can't get my head 'round why a killing machine would be put on a pedestal away from criticism. This doesn't happen here. None of this is adopted from England.

'Not a criticism, UR, but maybe we all point the finger at each other to make ourselves feel like we're our own masters? I know I've been guilty of it in the past.

UR, England is a weird place, and full of inconsistencies and contradictions. It may seem on the face of it that we bow down, but this is only part of the story.

Some of the things that happen here I can't begin to explain - including why we have this monarchy. Genuinely, the majority of the population are either apathetic to the monarchy, or think they're a drain on tax payers money. 'Biggest problem we suffer from is political apathy. Most people don't trust politicians and, thus, are completely disillusioned with, and disconnected from, the democratic process. There was a study done recently which surveyed the developed countries, and the message from this survey was that the English are the least trusting of politicians in the developed world (as much as you wish to trust a survey).

It's fair to say that you can trace the struggle for representation to England long before the US was conceived. That should tell you something. Northerners have a history of rebellion from maintaining catholicism during the reformation, to being anti-monarchist to various rebellions/riots during the industrial revolution.

Celebrities: you're spot on. It's lunacy. I couldn't begin to explain why they're put on a pedestal.

The engrained mentality comment is wide of the mark, as is the politically correct comments that seem to litter these types of threads. I think if any American spent some time in the real England (not central London), you would be left with a completely different picture from the one you have.

The BBC this morning was showing the US giving the Beckhams a raptuous welcome and Mr Beckham is reported to having said 'he is in for the long haul'.Mind at least he is good for something,he is good at his game.

As for Mrs Beckham,a TV personality?I heard something about that, mind all mention of the Beckhams in the news,my hearing tends to shut down.I only picked up on the information reported here after reading this thread last night.

Just please the US of A,when you get to know them, don't Judge Britons by those two!

And of course you have the,Beckham label to have thrust down your necks.

My neighbour's cat is called Beckham!

She hasn't had any kind of real success with anything except the Spice Girls over here in England (unless you count bagging herself a multi-million pound footballer husband  ). Her records have been uniformly awful, her book on fashion tips was nothing more than observations like "jeans and t-shirts are a good combination" (really? I'm surprised nobody has ever though of that, Victoria, you're so in touch with fashion), and the only discernable difference between the real life Posh and her Madame Toussard's waxwork is that the dummy has slightly more personality.

Good luck in the US, Victoria, you'll need it.

Darcy

Well I think Posh and Becks are wunnerful.
Admittedly Posh could put on a bit more weight with advantage but when Beckham starts bending those free kicks he'll have America eating out of his hands.

I heard that it is David who is going to host a current affairs chat show and Posh will conduct political interviews.
As for criticising we Brits for the cult of celebrity, we learned it from you lot.

If the Spice Girls do make a comeback I will be a happy man indeed.

The pair don't have any personalty between them but then not many celebrities and films stars have from what little attention I spend on the issue. However, why a world class footballer would would want to bury himself in a country that doesn't follow the sport, I've no idea. He could have gone to any country in the world and been appreciated for his footballing skills so he chooses the country that won't appreciate his skills. I guess that says something about his intelligence or maybe, his bloody-mindedness.

How about the zillions of greenbacks he is due to receive.?
By the way the American Ladies football team could beat both Scotland  and Wales on the same day.

So long as they dont start talking with an American accent all will be well.
