cyberdude611 -> House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 3:12:59 PM)

By a vote of 223 to 200, the House passed a bill to pull troops from Iraq.

However it is highly likely President Bush will veto the bill...

I agree, just let Iran have the damned country. It will make for a better looking map of the region.

Which means that even more Republicans and anybody else who doesnt vote to override his veto will be looking for work next election.

2/3rds majority is needed in both houses to override a veto. That wont happen.

Lordandmaster -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 5:57:20 PM)

Now let's see...running on an anti-war platform wasn't suicide in 2006.

Why will it be suicide in 2008?

I dont think it will.

But Congresspeople seem to forget to ask how their constituents feel about the war.

It is their constituents that can vote for somebody else when the person comes up for re-election.

I am not sure TheHeretic was making this point, but I suspect that PoliticalSuicide 08 is the name of the game for anybody who doesnt vote to override the veto.

Sinergy

p.s. Bush / Cheney for prison inmate, 08.

p.p.s.  We should change the voting laws for Congress that the 2/3 majority is 2/3 of the people who cast a vote.  Too many people vote against an override or non-passage of a law by abstaining.

I just have a feeling a sudden troop withdrawal is going to really really really blow up in our faces in many nastly ways.  And when it does I'm sure we'll have a thread about it to rant on.

cyberdude611 -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 7:22:19 PM)

That's a very good point.... History had a tendency to forget things. Even though Eisenhower got the US involved in Vietnam....who got the blame for that war? JFK, LBJ, and the Democrats.

The Democrats are going to inherit this war, like it or not. And if the first thing the Dems do when they have power in 2009 is a complete pull out and Iraq falls into Civil War.... Guess who history is going to get the blame for losing the war...Democrats.

Just like new management in a company. Does all the problems and failings of the previous management just suddenly go away? NOPE! Now it is up to the new management to fix the problems and set the company straight. If not, then the new management also gets the boot and will now share the blame for the company's failings.

Are you suggesting them being there in the first place did not already blow up in our face in many nasty ways?

Hmm, no I see the blame remaining on Bush for a long long time.  I don't intend to blame either really.  It's a screwed up situation started by an equally screwed up situation. Just a nastly chain reaction. The terrorists attacked us in reaction to us butting in on their culture, we reacted and attack them, they reacted and waged a guerilla war on us.  I can't see the outcome being much different regardless of who was in power.

I do know the US as a whole will be blamed and targeted for years if not decades to come no matter what we do to try to fix it.

TheHeretic -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 7:41:12 PM)

It isn't so much being "anti-war" that is political suicide.  In some districts that works well.  I think the foot on the third rail is in what they are opening themselves up to with this.  "They made us lose."  I see this as pandering to the anti-war bundle, and very risky for them.

My take is that the Dems are counting on that veto if this gets through the Senate, depending on Pres. Bush to save their sorry asses.  Right now, the news and pictures out of Iraq play right into their stategy.  If we start pulling out, the escalating violence with the first withdrawals and the chaos that follows can be layed right at their feet.  Let's see, withdrawal starting in 120 days and complete within five months...  All the blood on the news can be blamed on them as we head into the primaries.  And it will get rolling with Holiday season.  Ho Ho Ho.

That, I call Political Suicide.  They are gonna get lucky though.  Bush will save them.  The White House will tolerate no dissent (hell, they might even commit an impeachable offense the way things are happening now) and the siege mentality seems institutional.  They need an unpopular war right where it is for the backdrop to that, not competing for their sound-bites during the hearings.

Nothing but politics and posing for the cameras.  Jesus, do you think Pelosi is afraid Cindy could win?

HydroMaster -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 7:48:51 PM)

lol, why would they do a crazy thing like that?

cyberdude611 -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 8:50:28 PM)

Didn't a general or someone high up in the military recently say the war on terror is going to last at least another 15 years? I thought I remember someone recently saying that....

Lordandmaster -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 8:51:53 PM)

Sometimes I can't figure out what you're trying to say.  Are you implying that history doesn't blame Nixon for Vietnam?

Because that would be, you know, absurd.

Everyone from Eisenhower to Nixon played a role. But LBJ is the person most blamed for screwing up that war. He dropped more bombs than any president in American history (including "W"). To put it in perspective... During the entire LBJ presidency, a bomb dropped every 7 minutes.

Lordandmaster -> RE: House votes to pull troops from Iraq by April (7/12/2007 11:31:37 PM)

And yet...most Americans you ask today would blame Nixon first and foremost.

So much for that theory.

cyberdude:
I see no difference between pelosi&co. and bush&co.  All the House of Representatives needs to do to stop the war is to cease to fund it.  If they do not fund it there is nothing that bush&co. can do about it.
This is just "feel good legislation" that allows one side to blame the other without doing anything constructive that is in line with the wishes of their constituency.
Same mud different day.

Don't know that this is quite kosher, Nixon got us out, kinda heralded for that Kennedy was trying to get us out, but he got cakked.
