SAN DIEGO - In a surprise victory for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the City Council on Tuesday failed to override the mayor’s veto of a ban on some big-box stores in the nation’s eighth-largest city.

Councilwoman Donna Frye reversed sides after supporting the ban three times since September, resulting in a 4-4 deadlock that fell one vote short of putting the measure into law.

How is that a victory for Wal-Mart?  Seems to me it is a resounding defeat.

I happen to love Wal-Mart...and I make enough in my day to day to be able to pay for my used Pinto station wagon (in cash I might add)....so...I'm all for this victory.

(By the way...I'd like to add...my station wagon seats are REAL vinyl...not faux vinyl).

There was a ban on Wal-Mart. The mayor tried to veto the ban- so Wal-Mart wouldn't be banned anymore. Since the City Council didn't override the veto, Wal-Mart, which was formerly banned, is no longer. (Yeah, lots of negative-ish stuff to follow.)

Ya win a few, ya lose a few.

Wal-mart got kicked in the tail up in Portland recently -- Their most recent press release noted that they will no longer pursue ''such and such'' sites.

Sometimes community activism transcends the impression of three-thousand dollar suits and fake alligator shoes.

Sorry it was a deadlock vote meaning that the mayoral veto is still in effect.

Turn it around Sinergy. There was a ban on big box stores. The mayor vetoed that ban (allowing big box stores). City Council attempted to over ride the veto and reaffect the ban. They deadlocked and thus the mayoral veto is still in effect allowing for a SuperWalmart to be built in my oh so lovely city soon.

Alumbrado -> RE: San Diego defeats Wal-Mart superstore ban (7/12/2007 6:38:14 AM)

Why is this a surprise?

Are politicians not for sale to the highest bidder anymore?
