I asked a girl who works at my local bookstore to see Spamalot, she declined and seemed regretful, and when I suggested coffee or some such at a later time, she said ok, but as friends, because she has a boyfriend, and gave me a number. I called, left a message, didnt hear back. Now, about a month later, I'm at the book store (haven't seen here there since I called) and shes all 'Hey! how are you? how was Spamalot?', ect... and mentions her boyfriend twice in about four minutes or less. Huh?
Any interpretations of this? My instinct is to just avoid it all together... but a translation from woman-ese to man-talk would be interesting :)

she's just grateful that you're interested, which women wouldnt be? but she got a boyfriend...
the temptation from her part to want you to keep courtizing her vs her fidelity toward her boyfriend.
it's as simple as that.

She didn't want to hurt your feelings at the initial request to see the movie, hence the number given.  She acted friendly because she probably DOES like you AS A FRIEND and mentioned her boyfriend in hope you UNDERSTOOD that she is attached.  OR she may have been on the outs with her  boyfriend briefly and changed her mind about you.

Have you seen the new phone commercial where they guy tells the repair man that he gave his number to four hot chicks the night before and no one called him?  When the repairman is done and tells him that there is nothing wrong with his phone line, the man asks "Well, what's the chance they might have called all at the same time, and jammed the line?"  The repair man says "One in billion".  The other guy gives a sigh of relief and says "Oh then there IS a Chance!"

It is possible that she was having problems at the time with her boyfriend and you were a possible way to get even. It is possible that she gave you a phony phone number. It is possible that she was just being nice and had no intention of getting together with you.
My advice is to stop asking girls out that have boyfriends. There are less bad possibilities

Murmur- I love how you offer brilliant analaysis and use words like courtizing and call it simple :) Now, can you common-English-ize my law homework? Pretty please?

Estring- far, far too obvious of a solution.

youre a friend...nothing more...simple ...if they got a boyfriend stop asking them out..it will always end up messy.

Good Advice. It's either that, or you gotta do them both.

I am absolutely floored that you seem to have no clue whatsoever about the simple idea that someone might truly like you and want to be friends with you, and at the same time not be interested in you sexually or romantically.  Is the concept of friendship really that foreign to you?

I don't think her signals are mixed at all.

She. Has. A. Boyfriend. So. She. Won't. Date. You.

It's not personal.  It doesn't mean you're a "bad" person.  It just means that she's already involved in a relationship.  As far as her being friendly when you come into her place of work, well really - that's part of any job that deals with the public, eh?  Be friendly to the customers.  Sure, she might like you as a customer, but if she'd really really wanted to meet up with you outside of work, she would have returned your call.

Just a note - it's really awkward being hit on when you're at work by people who come into where you work.  I also feel it's inappropriate.

 to see the movie,

Spamalot:   Fabulous stage musical based on Monty Python that I would kill to see.  NOT a movie.

:-)

Sorry, couldn't let that go by.  (At least the OP has good taste AND a twisted sense of humor - he's got that going for him!)

Totally Off Topic:

MsSonnetMarwood:  I spent over $400 for two tix to the Broadway version.  It was mediocre.  The travelling show in Chicago was -- for $25/ticket -- just as funny.  The show is a real let down.

Now, if you wanna spend dough on musical theater, go see Avenue Q!

"It's the same thing," he said.

And now for something completely different...

Some friends saw it when it was in Baltimore and loved it, so we'll have to see :-)
