True enough.
He did not come out and admit it when he was (according to him) first looking for forgiveness. No, he waited until he got caught.
There was a branch of Catholicism in the Middle Ages known as (IIRC) Martyrology. These were people who would wear 300 pounds of metal chains around their body, flail themselves with nettles and thorns, wear a crown of thorns, whatever, all to prove that they were more sinful and repentant than the next guy.
Fast forward 1200 years and we have Mel Gibson, Jimmy Swaggart, Rush Limbaugh, etc., going out and flailing themselves apologetically. Screaming mea culpa, mea culpa, and begging for forgiveness.
At least when Bill Clinton was finally found to have gotten semen on Monica Lewinsky's dress, he was man enough to NOT apologize. He simply stated that it was a lapse in judgement on his part, and that he accepted full responsibility for his actions.
Additionally, Robin Williams checked himself in to Rehab after Mel Gibson got arrested because he did not want to put his family through things.
